When someone unfamiliar approaches his home or family member owner states that he might growl, lunge and snap. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 04/18/17 Summary: While Maciso has allowed some handling from select and familiar handlers, he remains uncomfortable with some forms of approach from strangers, becoming stiff. Out of concern for his stress level, a SAFER assessment will not be conducted at this time. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Pending. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 04/12/17 During his initial medical examination, Maciso was tense and tolerated minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: In line with what has been seen in the home, Maciso displays a low energy level in the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Maciso be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Maciso to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Maciso to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Maciso presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Maciso has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give dog the option to walk away from any social interaction. Maciso should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Maciso’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Dog may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Maciso has a bite history and is reported to escalate quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Maciso needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Maciso as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
