11/30/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/30/16 16:18 Macci is a three year old brown and white American Pitbull terrier. He was brought into ACC due to his owner no longer being able to care for him. He was with his owner since he was a few weeks old and was a gift from a friend. Macci has lived with two adults in his previous home. He is described as shy around strangers and takes a few minutes to warm up to new people. Once he feels comfortable he will engage in somewhat rough play and likes to jump on people. Macci has spent time with children ages two above and was described as gentle, he was aware of his size and would sit with the children and allow petting. Macci has spent time with both small and large breed dogs and is described as respectful and playful. He will engage in exuberant play. Macci will chase cats he sees on the streets. Macci is not bothered when his food is touched while eating. Owner stated he eats quickly and ignores anyone who approaches him. Macci will bark when a stranger approaches his home, he will retreat and after a few minutes he will warm up. Macci likes to play with balls and stuffed toys. Macci eats wet and dry food Pedigree brand and is fed twice a day. He is housetrained and is walked twice a day. Macci pulls very hard on leash and is used to brisk short walks. Macci is well behaved when left alone in the home. Upon intake Macci had a tense body and showed no interest in counselor. He stiffened when scanned and lowered his head, counselor was able to collar, scan (positive) and photograph.

12/06/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Altered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Gentle and tolerant Behavior toward dogs: Respectful and playful Behavior toward cats: Will chase cats he sees on the street FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/6/16 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 5. Dog growls and tries to bite. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Macci appeared fearful throughout the assessment, remaining tense and at times becoming stiff. Because of the appropriate warning signals displayed during his assessment, we believe Macci may do best if placed with a New Hope Rescue group who can follow up on his behavior in a more stable environment. PLAYGROUP: According to Macci’s previous owner, Macci has spent time with both small and large breed dogs and is described as respectful and playful. He will engage in exuberant play. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Macci is initially nervous but becomes more confident when socializing with calm male and female dogs. With further playgroup sessions, Macci has begun to socialize with calm male and female large dogs, as well as small dogs. He may mount a female and target a very nervous dog, but is responsive to handler interruptions. The Behavior Department believes that Macci would benefit by being placed in a home with a well-socialized, confident resident dog. A dog-dog interaction should be conducted to ensure compatibility. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/30/16 During his initial medical exam Macci had a tucked tail and lowered head, he backed away and handling was not conducted. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Due to the fear/avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we cannot fully evaluate Macci and feel that he will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
12/01/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
According to Macci’s previous owner, Macci has spent time with both small and large breed dogs and is described as respectful and playful. 12/1: Macci is nervous, greeting a novel female dog with a tucked tail. As he continues to greet her, he becomes slightly more relaxed and his tail becomes untucked. He spends most of his time calmly exploring the pen. 12/2: With a calm male dog, Macci continues to display nervous body language -a tucked tail and wide eyes- but relaxes slightly as the session continues. When an extremely anxious dog enters the pen, Macci begins to target and low growl as he moves towards the anxious dog. They are separated. 12/3: Macci displays nervous body language as she enters the pen, greeting a small group of male dogs. As she becomes relaxed she greets every one and then explores the pen. Macci mounts one of the male dogs and immediately listens to the handlers interruption. 12/4: Macci greets a calm female, displaying nervous body language and a tucked tail. He paces the pens anxiously and stands by the gate, seeking to leave. 12/5: Macci wanders with a small group of male and female dogs. He is sexually motivated towards a female dog, but immediately listens to handlers interruptions. He is a bit anxious, pacing the pens and whining by the gate, seeking to leave. 12/6-12/7: In a group of calm male and female large dogs, Macci is less nervous, greeting the other dogs with a neutral tail. He becomes more social as the session continues approaching the other dogs to greet.
