Summary: Rocky displayed a high level of energy on his assessment, jumping up on the assessor during tag and displaying a high amount of movement. He allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Rocky was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. During Rocky’s initial time at the Care Center, he was most comfortable interacting with respectful or gently playful dogs. During his current stay at the Care Center, Rocky initially keeps to himself in a group of male and female dogs. He then begins to solicit play, but offers correction when a dog begins to engage. The Behavior Department believes that Rocky would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home, however he may be placed with well-socialized. polite resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/30/17 During his initial medical exam, Rocky allowed all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Rocky so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. During his assessment, he repeatedly jumped up on the assessor moderately, in a playful manner. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5) _X_No cats : We advise against a home with cats as Rocky is reported to lunge in their direction Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Social hyper-arousal: Rocky became quickly aroused during tag, jumping up and biting his leash. It is recommended that all interactions with Rocky take place in a calm manner, structured manner, and that he be rewarded with treats and praise for remaining calm in the presence of people running or moving quickly around him. Positive reinforcement, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Anxiety: Rocky is reported to bark when left alone. We cannot be certain whether the behavior was due to boredom and are not aware of any attempts to remedy this behavior. It is a good idea to provide Rocky with durable, long-lasting chews and other engaging toys when he is left alone to direct his energy.

A volunteer writes:
“Double, double, toil and trouble.” But there’s nothing tricky or “witchy” about 2 year-old Macbeth. No this miniature, black gorilla is just as sweet as they come. A pretty, “pocket” pittie with eyes round and wide with love and an adorable raisin nose perfect for receiving endless kisses. When it’s time for a walk little Macbeth is eager beaver and hot to trot, springing to life in his kennel, bursting into a dance of joy. He’s a delightful sprite on leash, hurrying along the long path to the park, stopping only briefly to attend to a bit of very important business. Once we arrive at our destination I fasten a dapper bowtie around our gentleman, and in between lots of savory snacks Macbeth poses happily for pics. Unfortunately we don’t know much about our little gorilla’s past. We do know that his already-slight frame is a bit too thin, that his coat is in need of some loving care, and that his delicious, puppy paws, each one capped in a flash of white, hold nails that are much too long. At one point, as I take a few moments to scroll through the day’s photos, Macbeth shocks me by poking his adorable mug through the railing, his floppy jowls landing right in my lap. “Pay attention to me please!” he seems to say. And as soon as I’m finished laughing I give him one big snug and a giant squeeze, and a few more treats as penance for my wrongdoing. “What’s done cannot be undone,” they say and, take it from me, once you’ve met Macbeth you’ll not forget him. Nor would you ever want to. Macbeth is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
