08/24/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: There’s cute and wiggly…and then there’s this little gremlin! Mac is an expert at making you feel loved: he greets everyone we encounter in the hallways with hugs, won’t make you feel rushed if you want to mush his face, and his tail becomes a blur when he’s spoken to. He isn’t just soft and cuddly, he’s SUPER fun and smart too! He loves to play with toys (the perfect outlet for his energy) and has done very well with other dogs in our playgroups (even being used to help welcome newcomers to the party!). He isn’t bad on leash, sits for treats, and seems housebroken. I LOVE hanging out with Mac: he has so much love to give that if he doesn’t find a home to share it with soon I think he might burst at the seams!! He would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
08/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE EVALUATION for Mac A1122359 KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/19/17 Unaltered male, Stray Bite History: Mac was involved in two separate bite incidents, both leaving scratches. One incident involved a woman who was moving slowly away from Mac and another dog. The woman received a laceration on her leg; the victim was unsure which dog caused this injury. In the second incident (same day) Mac and the other dog escaped a fence and approached a woman and her son. The child received a scratch on his leg. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/19/17 Look:1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag:1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy: 1.1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog licks, then turns away. Summary: Mac was very friendly and social towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Mac socializes with multiple dogs and is tolerant of most inappropriate behaviors. He displays a soft posture, and is respectful when greeting nervous dogs. Mac was brought in as a stray with another dog but we do not know the details of his behavior around her. The Behavior Department recommends that Mac be placed in a home with resident dogs that match his clam sociability. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/17/17 Upon intake Mac was friendly and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/18/17: During his medical examination, Mac was very loose and wiggly, he allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Mac so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_New Hope Only: Due to Mac’s bite history we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force-free, positive reinforcement-based behavior modification and training to help Mac become a successful family pet.. Potential challenges: _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Information is minimal and both incidents occurred in while Mac and his housemate were together in the neighborhood. Mac will need guidance and consistency to learn appropriate interactions with people and to prevent any future bite or scratch incidents.
