12/28/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/28/16 11:38 Basic Information Mac is a two year old neutered American Pitt Bull Terrier. He is being surrendered because NYCHA has ordered the pet be removed from the home or face eviction. Owner bought him from a breeder when he was 3 weeks old. Owner stated he has no medical issues and last saw a vet 6 months ago, according to client. Socialization Mac will lunge and bark at strangers. He lived with kid’s ages 4 and 5. Owner stated he is playful with the kids and plays in an exuberant manner with kids and adults. He lived with a 2 year old male Yorkie. He was playful with the Yorkie and play exuberantly with him. He has never lived or spent time with cats. He has never bitten a person or animal. Behavior Owner stated he barks and lunges at strangers. He is not bothered by loud or sudden noises. Owner stated he does not guard food, treats of any kind, or toys. Owner stated he tolerates all kinds of handling. Owner has never trimmed his nails. He will bark if someone knocks on the door and he will lunge and bark if someone unfamiliar approaches his owner. For a New Family to Know Mac is described as affectionate, shy, and excitable with a medium activity level. He will follow his owner around when home. He likes to play with balls and chew style toys. He likes to play tug. He slept in the hallway of owner’s apartment. He was fed a mixture of wet and dry Pedigree dog food. Owner fed him two to three times a day. He is house-trained and will go potty on wee-wee pads inside and dirt when outside. He is well behaved when left home alone. He has never been left in a yard or crated. He knows commands sit and give paw. For exercise owner takes him on brisk walks on a leash. He pulls very hard and is never walked off the leash. Behavior during Intake Mac lunged and growled at me at the start of the surrender counseling session. I pulled out a treat and was able to make him sit. He ate the treat from my hand and he became relaxed. When his owner was going to leave Mac tried to bite my sneakers and lunged at my leg. He was able to tear a hole in my pants with his teeth when he lunged at my leg. No other handling took place.

He is well behaved when left home alone. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/30/2016 Summary: Mac is not a SAFER candidate at this time due to concerns for handler safety. Mac has avoided handling and interaction since intake and has given high-level warnings (lunging, growling, snapping). During intake, Mac lunged and growled at the Admissions Counselor and bit his pants leg. He did not break skin but he did tear a hole in the fabric. Mac appears to be experiencing high stress in the care center environment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Mac has not allowed handling while at the care center, so he has not been introduced to any dogs off-leash. However, his owner reports he “lived with a 2 year old male Yorkie. He was playful with the Yorkie and would play exuberantly with him.” Based on behaviors exhibited in the care center, the behavior department recommends allowing Mac time to acclimate to his new environment and decompress before introducing him to any resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/29/16 During medical initial exam Mac was tense and nervous, and he lunged at the handler during the exam ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the range of behaviors and warnings shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training for Mac as more aversive methods are likely to increase fear and aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Mac has given high-level warnings, including biting a staff member’s pants.
