09/06/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
9/6/16 17:52 Basic information: Luna a roughly 2 yr. old cocker span mix. The Owner got her from a family member as a gift; she has owned Luna for over a year. The owner surrendered Luna because she no longer has time to care for her. Luna has no health problems and was last taken to a vet in 2015. Socialization: Around strangers Luna is shy for a while but friendly. Luna has lived with a 3 year old child he is respectful around children and adults he does not know but does not like to play rough. Luna has never been around other dogs so the owner has no idea how Luna would behave around them. Luna has bitten a member of the family member a day before the intake because the person was playing too rough with Luna. Behavior: The owner stats that Luna does not allow anyone other than the owner moves her food or treats while she is eating or take her toys away. She may growl and snap at the person. Luna likes to be brushed (slowly) and given bathes but has never had her nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or her home she sometimes barks at the person. The owner says that Luna is scared of loud noises such as storms or fireworks and may hide from the noise. For a new family to know: The owner describes Luna as shy and friendly with a medium activity level. Her favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home Luna tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. Luna sleeps in the floor of the bedroom on a dog bed. Luna was fed name brand dry dog food three times a day. She is house trained and has never had an accident in the home, when outside she goes to the bathroom on or around trees and grass. For exercise Luna is used to brisk walks on the leash and twice a day and does not pull on the leash. Behavior during intake: Luna was tense with stiff body, when approached by staff Luna attempted to retreat from the staff member but allowed slow approach, owner was able to assist us, collared and placing in dog kennel.

09/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Luna came into our care centers as a bite hold; human child was playing too rough with her which resulted in a bite. Luna has displayed fearful/defensive behavior during her stay at our care centers, tolerating very minimal handling; any form of direct touch may result in a fearful bite. Because Luna poses such a high bite risk, the behavior department believes she is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER at this time and recommend she be placed with an experienced foster home through a New Hope rescue partner. It is also recommended Luna be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating her to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Luna to new and unfamiliar situations.
