04/10/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Luna means “moon.” A bright, guiding light in a sea of darkness. Something so far away but appearing so close. Not unlike Luna’s future family at present. Surrendered to our care due to “allergies,” 7 month-old Luna seems wise beyond her not-yet years. Sure she’s got wiggly, and playful, and kissy down pat. But there is an elegance to her that supersedes it all. She sits calmly for my treats something rarely seen in a pup so young. When I speak she cocks her head to one side and seems to genuinely be listening. This young girl is a student. She is light and bouncy on leash looking up at me as we make our way to the park. Here her actual age shows through. The wind picks up and she gives chase to each and every leaf. Anything can be made a toy with enough imagination, and Luna has no shortage. An overfed squirrel darts across our path and Luna yips with excitement. An honest to goodness playmate! (Or so she thinks.) Still she never pulls too hard and is mindful of me at all times. When it’s time to sit for pictures she does so without a care. Another area in which our Luna shines. Taking a bad photo of a subject this pretty would be a challenge even to the most novice of shutterbugs. Luna, beautiful inside and out, inspiring, impressive, and just as captivating as the moon itself. One can only hope that it lights her way home. Luna is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
04/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Luna came into our center as an owner surrender citing owner developing allergies. Owner reports Luna lived with a child, playful and gentle. Behavior around cats is unknown. Upon intake Luna was friendly and allowed all handling. Luna walked well on leash for her relief walk, but grabbed leash to tug upon entering SAFER assessment room. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail wagging. Luna leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, sniffs assessor’s hand. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, became playful towards end of game. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, slight wagging tail. Luna kept a firm grip on Toy, body loose. She approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, ears forward, tail above spine level. The Behavior Department feels Luna would do well with an Average adopter and would make a lovely family pet. She would benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct her puppy energy and enthusiasm. She may benefit from puppy obedience classes to learn not to grab the leash and chew/tug. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, playful towards end of game Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip , body loose. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
04/06/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Luna took time to warm up during her initial interaction then engaged in rough, running play during every interaction since. Her owner reports that when Luna interacts with dogs she is very excited but gentle. The behavior department feels that Luna could go to a home with another playful dog. When off leash with other dogs, Luna is initially nervous, then begins to engage in running play with a polite male dog. 4/6 update: Luna engages in soft play, and eventually running chase play with males and females. 4/7 update: Luna engages in bouts of play with males and females.
