08/18/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/18/17 19:54 Basic Information: Lulu is a 9 month old female ulatered puppy. She was given to owner three week ago. She appears healthy and has no health concerns. Owner surenders Lulu due to no time and hyperness. Socialization: Lulu lived with adults and unknown if she has been around children. Lulu has the most energy when she’s indoors and outdoors she is fearful. When outdoors if she hears cars or see other animals she will bark or run away. She is trained to use the bathroom outdoors but will destroy clothes such as socks and shirts. She eats dry food and usually sleep on her own bed. During intake Lulu was very friendly and energectic. She was jumping on the counselor and allowed all handling. She allowed the counselor to restrain her when she got energectic when other dogs passed. She would hard bark and pull towards other dogs when they passed by, but with the counselor and other people, she was friendly and happy.
08/24/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Beep beep! Beep beep! Make way for Lulu! Speeding through life with a seemingly endless supply of energy, a megawatt smile, and a heart full of love, this little black jelly bean is a total handful in the best possible sense. Luring me in with her silly tongue and curious head tilt, she proceeds to jump, hug and smooch every inch she can reach before getting her zoomie on by dashing after a tossed toy and dashing back just as quickly for a game of tug-o-war, followed by even more snuggles. Zoom-hug-zoomies continue until we’re both too hot to go on, and then it’s time for the talent portion of the show! Lulu sits very politely on command and takes her reward treats gently, she shows off her ‘stay’ skills as she waits for her toy, and once we hit the street she makes short work of potty time, too. Needless to say, a harness is definitely a must, but Lulu walks quite well and listens attentively to my voice, and even when she’s tempted to play with the leash, a loud ‘drop it’ command followed by the offer of a toy works like a charm. It seems she may not have much experience socializing with other pups, and while she does wag her tail toward passing dogs, Lulu’s shown discomfort when meeting off leash, and does some barking and pulling when on leash, too. Her adopters will need to train her in good greeting etiquette and commit to helping this happy-go-lucky girl grow into the well-rounded, well-socialized adult she has every potential to be. Puppies aren’t ‘easy’, they’re not born knowing the ins and outs of how the world works, and as with any child, patience and positive reinforcement make perfect. Every pet needs a parent’s guiding hand to help them on their journey, and in Lulu’s energetic case, a strong set of legs, too! Offer her a lifetime of love and support and in return, Lulu will not only do her very best to make you proud, she’ll give you her loyalty, her heart, her everything. For keeps.
08/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/18/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/19/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps on Assessor, grabs leash in mouth, mouths Assessor with no pressure. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Lulu displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment, jumping on the assessor and becoming mouthy at times. She was social throughout and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Lulu was social and active, jumping on the counselor and soliciting attention. She barked at dogs that were passing by. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/18/17 During her initial medical exam, Lulu was social and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Lulu so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the jumpy and mouthy behavior seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Lulu has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Lulu’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Lulu has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them and barking. Lulu may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
