07/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Luigi came into our center after a member of the public found him as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. During intake, Luigi jumped up on admissions counselor affectionately, allowed all handling. He pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. Luigi jumped up on assessor upon entering SAFER assessment area and continued to do so throughout the SAFER assessment. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, then jumped up to lick assessor’s face. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, ears and tail neutral. Luigi was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, became slightly playful towards end of game. He pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Luigi showed brief interest in toy, but quickly lost focus. He approached the helper dog quickly, barking, lip lick. The Behavior Team feels due to his size and strength, Luigi would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have very young children. He would benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners, body awareness, and not to jump up. Luigi would also benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play, as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, a bit playful towards the end Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw Toy: 1. Minimal, brief interest but quickly loses focus Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, barking
