12/11/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lucy and Desi, likely related, were found abandoned in an apartment building after their owners were evicted. Life must have been difficult and precarious for both humans and pets.. Lucy and Desi are on the thin side, their coat has seen better days and they are both very shy. Lucy is hesitant to be leashed , so I let her come on her own to the door. That is more to her like. She walks well, does her business and enjoys a little bit of time free in a pen. She does not care for dry treats but loves smoked turkey. She does sit on command to get more but is a little scared of my big camera so I decided to use a smaller one. She is fine being outfitted with a scarf and accepted my caresses, even licks my hand. Lucy is so beautiful, an elegant fairy, all dressed in white and with light color eyes that blend blue and green…Back in the care center, Lucy acts more tense. She does not even want tasty cold cuts anymore. This is not the place she wants to be…but ..home….Yes, Lucy wants a place to call home, a safe haven, a warm blanket, a daily meal and mostly an owner or family who will love her to pieces.. With her, we are wishing upon a star for her life to be at last, the one she deserves. Lucy is at the Manhattan Care Center.
12/07/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray Other notes: Upon intake Lucy allowed handling. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/7/2016 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body tense and trembling Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body a bit tense, head low, mouth closed Tag: 2. Dog does not follow at the end of the leash, fearful, tail tucked, unresponsive to touch Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, then walks away. Summary: Lucy appeared fearful and timid but allowed all handling; Lucy may do best upon a slow/soft approach as she leaned into assessor at end of assessment. PLAYGROUP: 12/6: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Lucy is nervous and does not approach. At this time, the behavior department feels that Lucy may be most comfortable as the only resident dog until follow up can be continued outside the care center. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/5/16 During her initial medical exam Lucy appeared tense and nervous. ENERGY LEVEL: IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Though observed to be human-social, Lucy may need time to warm up to the handler as she initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Lucy to interact at her own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience)
12/06/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
12/6: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Lucy is nervous and does not approach. At this time, the behavior department feels that Lucy may be most comfortable as the only resident dog until follow up can be continued outside the care center. It should be noted that Lucy arrived into the care center with another dog that had sustained bite wounds- however, the origin of these bite wounds remains unknown, and it can not be said for sure if these were caused by interaction between Lucy and the other dog in the home.
