09/08/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Lucky A1123980 is at risk for concerns that he is not thriving in the shelter environment. He allows handling but remains timid, and is beginning to show signs of barrier reactivity in his kennel (growling, hard barking, baring teeth). In order to prevent continued rehearsal or escalation of this behavior, we recommend that he move out of the kennel environment quickly.

09/01/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/01/17 14:32 Basic information: Luck is a 7 year old, neutered, large breed dog. Previous got him as a gift 7 years ago and unfortunately had to surrender him due to being evicted. Socialization: Lucky is fearful of strangers and will growl if they get too close to him. He likes to come up to them first and sniff them. He will eventually warm up them after a couple of days. He is respectful of children and plays gently with them. He is respectful of other dogs and cats but doesn’t play with them. He was also around a parrot and didn’t seem to be bothered by it. Behavior: During storms if alone, Lucky may be nervous but he is ok with previous owner. He is ok with getting his food, treats, and toys touched. He doesn’t mind being held or getting brushed and bathed. He will bark if someone unfamiliar comes towards the home and will growl if they come towards owner. He has never had his nails trimmed. For a new family to know: Lucky is a playful, mellow, affectionate, independent dog that has a medium activity level and knows when you may be upset. She loves chewing on stuffed toys and chew bones. He will follow you around while you are home. He is mostly indoors and eats pedigree twice a day. He is housetrained and will go on cement and grass. He is well behaved when left alone and knows how to sit, stay, come, and lay down. He gets 2 slow walks on leash a day and may pull lightly. Upon intake, Lucky was calm and sniffed counselor. Counselor had owner put collar and leash on Lucky. Minimal handling was done.
09/07/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lucky, although reserved, accepted me, a perfect stranger, right away when I came to his door. He is a tall and strong dog who pulls somewhat on the leash. He appears house trained as indicated by his former owner, and sniffs a lot his new territory. Lucky is with us as his family lost their home. He played gently with the children of the house and was respectful of other dogs and cats, although he did not play with them. He even shared his life with a…parrot. He is said to be obedient, well behaved when left alone, free of handling or guarding issues, mellow, affectionate and independent. Lucky would not be comfortable with strangers until he got to know them. With pets, like with people, the way to approach them is the key to good relationships. Lucky and I hit it off right away, and I must say that quite a number of staff and volunteers had a good experience spending time with him. He did shy away, gently, from others. Lucky is a beautiful dog, a shiny chestnut brindle, perfectly groomed and healthy, statuesque. He is quite a good listener and follows readily orders. He sits at the sight of a treat and comes right away when called. I love the way he expertly catches duck jerkies thrown in the air. He becomes a little hard of hearing when he sees another pooch on the other side of the pen and wants to meet, his tail vibrating actively. He sits at my feet like he was my own dog, and welcomes petting. I really like Lucky, his breath-taking beauty, his smooth manners and his non-overwhelming and friendly presence. I know that as I get to know him more, we will end up being very fond of each other. Come and meet Lucky at the Manhattan Care Center, see what a great dog he is, and bless him with a great new life full of shared joy and love.

Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is down, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Summary: Lucky appeared a bit fearful during the assessment, having a tense body and being reluctant to approach the assessor at times. He allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: Lucky keeps mostly to himself when interacting with dogs in the care center. He has been tolerant of approach from respectful dogs. His previous owner also describes him as “respectful” around dogs. The behavior department feels that Lucky would be most compatible with other respectful dogs who are well socialized. Slow introductions are recommended. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Lucky was calm. The counselor did not handle him. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/1/17 During his initial medical exam, Lucky was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: Lucky’s previous owner described him as having a medium level of activity.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to Lucky’s history of growling at strangers, and due to the fearful behavior, he displays in the care center, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Lucky’s previous owner reported that he is fearful of and growls at strangers. In the care center, he displays fearful behavior with new people. Lucky gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Lucky, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Lucky to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention.
