12/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Intact, Owner Surrender Bite history: Lucky was interacting with a small dog, attempting to mount him and when offered correction (growl) from the small dog, Lucky lunged and bit the small dog in the face. Upon entering the care centers, Lucky snapped at his owner. Other notes: Lucky was stiff and trembling during intake SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/13/16 Summary: Lucky has been difficult to remove from and return to the kennel. Lucky has allowed some handling in the care center but he is tense and avoids interaction with new caretakers; he watches and tracks the humans around him carefully at all times. Due to the behaviors observed, and out of concern for his stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time. Please see known history. PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/04/16 During his initial medical examination, Lucky attempted to lunge forward towards handlers, allowing no handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Due to the fear/avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we cannot fully evaluate Lucky and feel that he will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training for Lucky as aversive methods are likely to heighten his fear and increase aggression.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (See bite history; Lucky is extremely nervous around strangers and can be difficult to handle. It is important to respect those signs and to help Lucky gain comfort and confidence in order to avoid escalation.)
