09/25/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/25/15 21:08 Basic information: Bucky is a 3 year old pit bull, his owner had him since he was 3 weeks. He got him as a gift from a friend but had to give him up because his wife is having a baby. The last time he went to the vet was a year ago. The two things his previous owner liked most about him were; he always waits by the door for him to come home and he is playful. Social Life and Personality: Around children Bucky is relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant but gentle. Around other dogs Bucky is also relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant. Around cats Bucky is aggressive, he barks and lunges at them. Bucky is house-trained and rarely has accidents. Bucky’s activity level is medium and he can be described as playful, excitable affectionate, shy, anxious and friendly. Behavior issues: Bucky was friendly when his previous owner touched his food bowl, treat, toy while eating or playing. Is also friendly if he is pushed off the furniture, given a bath, if his feet are touched, his coat is brushed or if he is held or restrained. If an unfamiliar person approached them home he barks. He was afraid if an unfamiliar person approached his previous owner and isn’t bothered if he’s disturbed while sleeping. For a New Family to Know: Bucky knows how to sit. For exercise he went on brisk walks twice a day. He likes to play with squeaky toys and balls. His favorite games are fetch and tug. When his previous owner was home Bucky would tend to follow him around. When left alone in the home Bucky is well-behaved. Bucky is nervous during storms/fireworks. Bucky ate wet and dry Pedigree and at night he slept on the couch. Behavior during intake: Bucky allowed handling, he was a little tense and fearful of hands, and he would crouch down when scanned and hid in between owners legs but took treats gently and showed no signs of aggression.
03/17/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Three year old Bucky is with us with son, Neville and girlfriend Chante as their family was no longer able to care for them. When asked what he likes the most about Bucky, his owner answered: “He always waits for me by the door when I come home….” A loving and loyal pooch, with the same master since the tender age of 3 weeks…Bucky , like his housemates would likely be good with dogs and children but not with cats. He is very anxious at the care center. The separation from his friends and family has taken a serious toll on him. He cries some, pulls on the leash, wants to go back to his kennel. He does not care for any treat, even the most tasty ones. Little by little, though, he relaxes, comes for caresses, hops on the bench and settles with his body very close to mine. He gives kisses. He is making progresses. The ball does not catch his interest yet. May be tomorrow. Bucky walks back to his kennel, enters without fuss and lays down with me at the edge of his den… Baby steps…in the right direction…Good job, Bucky, we are on your side…and hope that soon enough, a good and loving home will be in the cards.
03/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
3/18/16 Update: Bucky has shown some improvement in the care center, working with our enrichment team, but continues to display high anxiety, constantly vocalizing both outside and inside the kennel. He becomes focused on any dogs passing the pen outside and it is difficult to redirect his attention. Sometimes while petting Bucky, Bucky’s body language will become tense but does not display any aggression. Bucky is not thriving in the kennel environment, and due to his level of distress we recommend that he move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible. SAFER: 3/15/16 Bucky is fearful of the shelter environment he pulls on walks with a low and fearful body language. He was fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment. Bucky had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. Bucky was surrender to us. According to his previous family described him as a playful, excitable affectionate, shy, anxious and friendly. Around children Bucky is relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant but gentle. Around other dogs Bucky is also relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant. Around cats Bucky is uncomfortable; he barks and lunges at them. Bucky was friendly when his previous owner touched his food bowl, treat, toy while eating or playing”. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Bucky is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Bucky is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest.
03/15/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bucky is uncomfortable with interaction during off leash socialization. He often avoids the helper dog, and may offer a growl once approached. He arrived into our care with two other dogs, and Bucky’s behavior around dogs was described as “relaxed and playful and when he plays he is exuberant” by his previous owner. The behavior department recommends allowing Bucky time to accliamte as the only resident dog in a new environment before following up on his behavior around other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Bucky approaches to sniff at the gate, but once in the pen ignores the helper dog. 3/16 update: Bucky keeps to himself and growls when approached.
