Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited 7/19/17 Unaltered male, stray Previously lived with: Unknown Bite history: Yes, on 7/19/17 Luck was dropped off to the client, who intended to keep him. While in the park both were sitting on the grass when the client went to pick him up; Luck turned and bit her on her left hand. Upon biting her, Luck immediately released leaving three scratches, and breaking skin. The wound was cared for at home. According to the client Luck gave no warning signs of his discomfort. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/2/17 Unable to SAFER due to behavior concerns. Summary: Luck was difficult to handle, giving whale eyes, stiff, and baring teeth at the assessor during previous interactions. He appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Luck is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see he is surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior. PLAYGROUP: Enrichment-7/27: Luck came to the front of his kennel when I came to get him, and he was easy to rope and take out to the pens. He allowed me to attach a drag leash to him and relieved himself. In the pen I sat on the ground and he went to the corner nearest to me and sat. I called him over to me but he did not respond. When I stood up and moved to the other side of the pen he followed and sat near me. I tried to pet him softly on the body but he head flipped towards my hand with a closed mouth. He pulled away when I roped him but was otherwise easy to return to his kennel. Luck is still not very social, but he has become easier to handle INTAKE BEHAVIOR 7/19/17 At intake Luck was sniffing around the office and became tense and low growled when counselor went to scan him. He did not allow collaring. Luck did snap, and move away. Limited handling was done due to this behavior. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/20/17 During the initial examination Luck was very tense, trembling. Flinches every time he is touched, low growls when scrotum is touched. Does not settle into handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Luck displayed a low energy in the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: NHO _X_Place with a New Hope partner-Due to all noted concerns displayed in a care center environment, the behavior department recommends Luck be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Luck to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Luck to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Luck presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression-Luck has attempted to bite during his stay in our care centers when uncomfortable; guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Luck to new and unfamiliar situations.
