03/08/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get. But sometimes, if you’re very, very lucky, what you get is a delectable mix of toffee and fudge mixed with perfect, irresistible sweetness. From the moment I meet 2 year-old Lt. Dan, we two were like peas and carrots. And when he cocks his head to the right at the sight of my leash, one floppy ear flops over, and I’m all but certain that this is love. Dan is quickly leashed, and we’re off into the cold where I notice how slight our lieutenant is. Beneath his swirling fur I can see the trace of rib and bone, and I quickly drape a coat across him, a suit of armor–if just for now. As we make our way, I spot something else about our hero. A bit of a limp, one tender, bruised wing, maybe a battle hard-fought and won. But Dan seems pain-free, eager, and happy to be out, so we have a quick trot around the block, and eventually settle into a pen. There is something so calm and serene about this young boy. As if though just 2 years-old, Dan already is a veteran of this world. He sits for his treats, sniffs a comrade through the fence, and poses for photos, head tilted to one side, as if he’s been doing it all his life. As the sun shifts allegiance and moves briskly across the road, Dan’s eyes follow it, his head now tilted upward towards the sky. I imagine that if Dan were a bird he would fly far–far, far away from here, and how fortunate that he is not. Fortunate that right here is where he stands. A quiet hero wrapped in the city, just waiting to be found. Lt. Dan is waiting in adoption adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
