02/01/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: As fate would have it, I was head over heels in love with Love before I had even learned her name. As a new arrival, she didn’t yet have a card with her name on it, but like cupid, she pierced my heart with her soft pleading eyes and wiggle butt when I approached her cage. All I could do was give her some treats and speak to her softly, assuring her I would be back the next day to actually make her acquaintance. You can imagine my surprise to learn her name later, and how utterly perfect it was! After falling in love at first sight, I was a little nervous that Love wouldn’t quite measure up to the illusion I had of her the day prior. She was all I expected and more. At nearly 80 pounds, somewhat of a little chunker, Love could stand to lose a few pounds and her appetite for treats can be a bit overwhelming! She knows the command “sit” but is much more content to prop her paws into your lap. She seems housetrained and doesn’t seem to mind other dogs at all. She let me dress her up in a tutu and though she looked more like that dancing Hippo in a tutu from Disney’s Fantasia, she pulled it off with a grace to be admired. Come to the Brooklyn Care Center today and see just how easy it is to fall in Love!
02/03/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Love came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. During SAFER Love came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, she was friendly and social towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Love follows the handler but a bit distracted during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Love was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Love exhibited on leash reactivity while being brought to playgroup. As she was exiting the building, another dog was being walked into the outside gate and barked at Love. In response, Love barked and lunged in the other dog’s direction. Love’s behavior may be due to being startled or surprised by the other dog’s behavior as she was leaving the building or it may be leash reactivity, a behavior that may or may not be related to being housed in a shelter environment. Due to this concern the behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter who are able to handle her reactivity on the leash while outside on walks. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: Love exhibited on-leash reactivity while be brought to playgroup. As she was exiting the building, another dog was being walked inside and barked at Love. In response, Love barked and lunged right back. Also during one introduction to a new dog, Love hard barked during her initial greeting through the fence. Otherwise, Love engaged in rowdy, bouncy play with several other dogs.
01/31/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Love greets other dogs with exhuberant energy but polite energy. After initial sniffs she will solicit play with bouncy bows and engages in rowdy play with chest bumps and paw slaps. Love has a unique play solicitation. She air snaps, akin to an alligator to get the other dog’s attention. She does correct for inappropriate behavior. Although Love appears to be properly socialized, she did appear uncormfortabe when meeting a male German Shepherd through the fence, greeting him with a sniff followed by several hard barks. This may be due to barrier frustration, which Love has been showing signs of while on leash in the Care Center or she may just be selective when meeting new dogs. Regardless, the Behavior Department feels that Love would be able to live in a home with other dogs as long as a proper introduction is done. When off leash with other dogs, Love greets appropriately with a loose, soft body. She does not engage in play but is tolerant of high energy, pushy behavior from a male, allowing him to jump all over her without any reaction. ** Social Greeter Dog ** 2/01 update: Love greets the helper dog with exhuberant energy. After initial sniffs the two dogs engage in rowdy, play with chest bumps and bounces. Love has a unique play solicitation. She air snaps, akin to an alligator to get the other dog’s attention. She does correct for inappropriate behavior. 2/02 update: Today Love exhibited on-leash reactivity while be brought to playgroup. As she was exiting the building, another dog was being walked inside and barked at Love. In response, Love barked and lunged right back. Also during one introduction to a new dog, Love hard barked during her initial greeting through the fence. Otherwise, Love engaged in rowdy, bouncy play with several other dogs.
