07/18/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Gorgeous Louie is a charmer as true blue as his sparkling eyes and he’s just as beautiful on the inside too! A big, energetic boy who’s always up for fun in the sun and not fussed whether it arrives on two legs or four, he greets every new friend with eager tail wags and an open heart. Playgroup with the ladies was a rousing success as Louie engaged in soft, bouncy play and while he’s not had a chance to mix it up with the guys off-leash, he meets them outdoors with amiable curiosity and a happy tail. Louie’s so smart and eager to engage and with two great motivators guaranteed to grab his attention (toys and treats), he’s packed with potential for training stardom in his new home. He’s seemingly very house trained and already making good progress on learning to wait for a treat and even when he does grab it with impatience, his mouth remains soft so there’s no fear for your fingers. Toys are another welcome distraction and while his ‘sit’ is still a work in progress and he likes to keep them for himself, he doesn’t guard so a short game of tug-o-war is always fun and of course, nothing beats the satisfaction of settling down to surgically pull apart a plush toy–plushies are the best! Young, handsome and so full of promise, Louie is on the cusp of a rock star adulthood and with the right amount of guidance, training, toys and play time he is going to shine, shine, shine!
07/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 07/05/17 Intact male, Stray Bite history: Yes; Louie jumped up to handler’s face and bite nose, resulting in tear. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/16/17 Summary: Due to the high level of energy and the propensity for Louie to quickly become aroused, the behavior department believes a SAFER assessment is inappropriate at this time. PLAYGROUP: Louie engages in soft play with female dogs in the care center. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog. The behavior department feels that Louie may be most compatible with other social female dogs, and recommends slow introductions at a comfortable pace. Behavior around male dogs is unknown, and introductions to them should also be proceeded with at a slow pace. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 07/06/17 Upon intake, Louie appeared relaxed and receptive to touch MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/07/17 During his initial medical examination, Louie was active (high energy) and attention seeking. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center Louie has been active and enthusiastic. Due to the anxiety seen, he may need some guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. Louie will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Louie’s lack of impulse control in addition to his poor bite inhibition, we recommend an adult-only home at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the noted concerns displayed at the care center, the behavior department recommends Louie be placed with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended _X_Social hyper-arousal: Louie’s low threshold for arousal has the potential to rapidly escalate and we cannot be certain of the depth of his energy/enthusiasm. Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Louie to new and unfamiliar situations _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Louie has been observed to be mouthy in the care center, which has escalated to a degree of broken skin; decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys
