06/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Loreta is a severely fearful dog who appears to be very undersocialized. While in the Care Center she has not walked on leash, balking and pancaking each time she is moved and needs to be carried inside and outside. She showed fear-based aggression when initially brought in: head flipping and air snapping. Loreta does allow soft, slow petting but is very sensitive to sudden movements and will withdrawl and tuck herself further into the corner of her kennel. When visited by the Enrichment team Loreta was on her bed, eyes wide, head low. She accepted treats from her caretaker’s hand, slowly and with a soft mouth. Due to her severe fear level, inability to walk on leash, and discomfort with handling, she is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER aggression assessment at this time. We recommend placement for Loreta and friend Loredo with a New Hope partner prepared to work slowly and patiently to acclimate the dogs to life alongside humans, to help them learn to trust human caretakers and to gain confidence. This will likely be a very long, slow process, due to the severity of their fear and the limited known history we have. We recommend ONLY the use of positive reinforcement methods to work with these two dogs, they are far too sensitive and fragile for even mild punishment or aversives.
06/21/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Loreta was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. 6/21: Loreta was very shut down and required a large amount of coaxing to come into the play pen, eventually needing to be carried. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Loreta was nervous but showed interest in greeting the other dog. She greeted, allowed the other dog to greet her, and stood in one spot. 6/26: Loreta was reluctant to come out of her kennel when we came to get her. We took her out with Loredo, who came to the shelter with her. She was hesitant walking out to the pens, but by walking slowly with her and walking her with Loredo we managed to get her outside without carrying her. In the pens she would solicit attention from us by rubbing her head on our hands. When we stopped petting her she would continue to solicit attention until we pet her again. We offered her high reward treats, but she showed no interest in them. She was similarly reluctant on the walk back to her kennel, but again we managed to get her back and in her kennel without carrying her.
