03/12/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lorax is a middle aged gentleman, bright eyed , well nourished and well dressed who was found as a stray but looking like he just came out from his house…He is quite handsome and although a little stressed and lost, he is good company, welcoming, comes when called and sits on command for treats he takes gently from my hand. He is a wonderful walker, strolling at my pace around the block, marking slightly his territory, sniffing the ground and very civil to all other dogs met, big and small. Lorax recognizes a good butt scratch and will submit himself to a full body treatment. He certainly likes to be cared for..Who does not ? Lorax passed excellently his behavioral evaluation and can be found on our adoption quarters , ready to meet you and convince you that a slightly older dog can be a wonderful companion…Lorax is already dreaming of you..at the Manhattan Care Center. Another volunteer writes: There are miracles to be found in each day, and today’s miracle is that we were able to find the strength to gently take Lorax’s face away from ours and take him off our laps and put him back in the kennel….and it was only because we know you are coming for him. This dog, a volunteer and staff favorite, has fallen from dog heaven, and it is a privilege to advocate on his behalf. He knocked the socks off the behavior staff, a far tougher audience than we are, who melt at his gentle kisses and kindness before we even get into how incredible this gentle love is with other dogs, how generous he is with sharing his toys and treats. Lorax is a dog any human would be blessed to have in their lives, a dog who will remind you of daily miracles with his every kiss. It will be your blessing to rescue him….
03/02/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lorax pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Lorax followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag with assessor. He was not interested in toys. Lorax did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears relaxed, open mouth. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest.
03/02/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Lorax has only displayed sexually motivated behaviors while in the care center. He has only been with females and has shown some barrier reactivity toward males (stiffening and a low growl). He arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs is unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing Lorax into a home with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Lorax is mostly sexually motivated but briefly does engage in play. 3/9 update: Lorax is persistantly sexually motivated and repeatedly attempts to mount a female.
