05/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for: Hercules A1110346 KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/28/17 Intact Male, Stray Bite history: Yes, Hercules was off leash and ran up to another dog and bit. Other notes: Upon intake Hercules was frieghten coming out the carrier. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/17/17 Look:2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1:3. Dog closes mouth, becomes a bit tense. Flank Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Hercules was friendly and social towards the assessor during his assessment, he displayed no concern. PLAYGROUP: According to Hercules previous guardian, Hercules was off leash when another dog who was on the leash came walking up. At this time Hercules then ran toward the other pitbull and they began to fight. The previous guardian did not provide any further information on Hercules’ history around other dogs. Due to Hercules’ DOH status and the nature of his bite, an attempt was made to place a muzzle on him before an off leash dog-dog interaction. Due to Hercules’ discomfort with handling -head whipping towards the handler that was attempt to place a muzzle on him- and his increasing anxiety level a muzzle was not able to be placed on him safely at this time. When greeting a novel female dog through the gate, Hercules is whining while leaning his body forward and pushing his muzzle through the gate. His body language stiffens for a moment before he begins jumping and pawing at the gate while continuing to whine. He displays the same body language when greeting a novel male dog. Due to Hercules’ bite history with another dog and the inconclusive behavior towards other dogs while at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that Hercules be the only resident dog at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/29/17 During his medical examination, Hercules was active and attention seeking, he allowed all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Hercules so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Single-Dog home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Hercules’ bite history with another dog and the inconclusive behavior towards other dogs while at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that Hercules be the only resident dog at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the Hercules’ bite history in addition to some dog/dog concerns in shelter, Hercules may be best set up to succeed through placement with a rescue group who can further assess this behavior before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Hercules has displayed dog reactivity while on leash, becoming stiff and fixated. Hercules may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs, novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
