07/29/2017 WEB MEMO
A staff member writes: London honey, you are gorgeous. She’s a tiny little love bug with a big heart. Once I met London, I was in awe. She is so sweet and so kind. When I took London out, she had a loose wiggly body, and wagged her tail non-stop. London loves to be the center of attention. She likes to play around and burn out her energy. When in the play yard, we run around and London engages in play with her toys. She really loves her tennis balls. I can only imagine she dreams of pool full of tennis balls that she can lay her pretty self in one day and I tell you this much, she deserves it. As much as I enjoy this little lady’s company, I would love it if she can get a forever home, in which she wouldn’t have a worry or care in the world. Come check London out at Brooklyn ACC, you will instantly fall in love.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/23/17 Unaltered female, stray Previously lived with: Unknown SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/25/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is stiff. Summary: London was social towards the assessor, though stiff with the toy, she allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: Summary: London was brought in as a stray so her behavior around other dogs is unknown. London appropriately greets a novel female with a soft body. She investigates her surroundings, occasionally checking with the other dog. As the session continues, she approaches the greeter and displays a tall posture before walking away. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 7/23/17 Upon intake London was very friendly and allowed the counselor to collar her and placed her head on the counselor lap. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: During the initial examination London was attention seeking and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on London so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. London has displayed a medium activity level in the care center, we recommend daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet to direct her energy and enthusiasm. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: London has growled and lunged at a handler while in playgroup when she was interrupted during a play session.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to potential possession guarding behavior, within the care center London gave an appropriate warning of her discomfort takes away toy (stiff) but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that London can be left alone while engaged with the toy item so she does not need to escalate to a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. _X_New Hope Only: Due to all noted concerns displayed in the shelter environment, the behavior department recommends London be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow London to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing London to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior London presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X Resource Guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted in the care center as London was observed to become stiff when engaged with toy items when attempting to remove them. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from London’s possession without safely trading for an item of greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment.
07/24/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash at the Care Center, London greets a novel male and female dog with raised hackles and a tense posture. She is tolerant of his solicitations but mostly keeps to herself, checking in with the group on several occasions. Her posture stiffens when she repeatedly greets the other female. She briefly places her chin over her back, before walking away. London was brought in as a stray so her behavior around other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department believes that London would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home, however if she is placed in a home with another resident dog, the other dog should be well socialized and match her calm demeanor. All introductions should be conducted slowly and under supervision. 7/24:London greets the novel male dog with raised hackles and a tense posture. She is tolerant of his solicitations but mostly keeps to herself, checking in with him on several occasions. 7/25: London appropriately greets a novel female with a soft body. She investigates her surroundings, occasionally checking with the other dog. As the session continues, she approaches the greeter and displays a tall posture before walking away. 7/26: In a group of calm male and female dogs, London displays a stiff posture when interacting with another female. She briefly places her chin over her back, before walking away.
