WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Her name is Lola and she might be past her showgirl days, but her sweet old girl days (the best kind!) are just getting started. We’re told she’s gentle and respectful around people (she’s been around little ones as young as 4), well behaved when left alone, is affectionate and mellow, and loved to follow her person around the home. She can be shy around new people and is still getting her bearings at the shelter, but seems very much like an incredibly kind, unassuming, sweet lady!! Her face is more human-like than canine-like, she has been very easy to walk on leash, and she seems housebroken. She hasn’t let loose and played with me yet, but she really lights up at the sight of tennis balls and even stands on her hind legs before I throw them. She is looking for a person to love…please come see her at Brooklyn ACC!

Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body a bit tense with her mouth closed. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Flank Squeeze 1&2: 3. Dog head flips while moving hip away. Toy: 1.Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away. Summary: Lola was friendly but a bit timid towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: According to her previous owner, Lola has not spent time around other dogs. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Lola briefly greets a novel male dog before wandering in the pen and keeping to herself. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 6/12/17: Upon intake Lola was calm and quiet, she allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/13/17; During her medical examination, Lola was calm and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Her previous owner reports a medium activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5)- Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Lola may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. She should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at her own pace. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful- The behavior department recommends allowing Lola to approach her potential new adopters at her own pace. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Lola to new and unfamiliar situations.
