03/14/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lola lays at her door. I misunderstood her soft snoring for a subtle growl. I should have known better… Lola is a gentle soul whose life likely was not posh. She is stern, probably carried her share of litters and seems at first all about survival. Lola reveals herself little by little. The longer you stay with her, the more you discover how nice she is. She is not eager, and although she likes treats, she takes them gently from my hand and not without sitting. She does not search my goodies bag either. She walks beautifully on the leash, not forgetting to do her business in the street. Although a little distant at first, time did its job and Lola, after a while, came quickly at the call of her given name, sat and accepted caresses, wagging her tail and rubbing her head into my lap. Lola is a pretty gal, well nourished and with a strange scab on her forehead. She looks a little rough around the edges but I bet that a more clement life would transform her into a little princess. Her eyes do not avoid mine, and by the end of our session together, I felt that trust had sunk in. I am looking forward to meeting Lola again and finding out more about her. I hope that soon the wheel of fortune will turn happily for her and land her a wonderful home and family. Lola is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting for you. 03/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lola came into our center after a member of the public found her as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. During intake, Lola appeared nervous in the back of Finder’s car and also in our lobby. During her initial medical exam, Lola was timid, allowed handling but would jump away and times and offer nervous lip licks. Lola walked nicely on leash for her relief walk, no pulling. Lola was relaxed and sociable upon entering the SAFER assessment room. She held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, body soft, tail wagging. Lola stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, tail wagging, ears back. She was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, focused on exit. Lola pulled her paw back on first Squeeze attempt, moved body away on second. She had no response to both Flank Squeezes. Lola kept a firm grip on Toy, when approached she would stop playing and become a bit tense but was easy to redirect away from it when not directly approached. When off leash with other dogs, Lola is tolerant of being sniffed and greeted, and eventually offers a very brief sniff. She moves away when the other dog attempts to mount. Due to her potential possessiveness with toys, the Behavior Team feels Lola would do best with an Experienced adopter who does not have very young children. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is distracted and unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on other stimuli Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back paw. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1/ 2. 1 Dog does not respond at all. Toy 3. Dog takes away, keeps a firm hold, stops playing and stands still when approached, a bit tense. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Lola is tolerant of being sniffed and greeted, and eventually offers a very brief sniff. She moves away when the other dog attempts to mount.
