I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 01/15/2016 from NY 11433, owner surrender reason stated was PETS CONFL.

01/16/16 11:35 BASIC INFORMATION: Lola is a spayed, brown brindle/white 5 yr old American Pit bull terrier. Lola was given to the owner as a gift 8 months ago & has no known health issues. Lola has not been to a Vet in over a year, she was surrendered to ACC due to pet conflict with owners two other dogs. SOCIALIZATION: Lola is friendly towards strangers & allows strangers to pet her & approach her. Lola has resided with a 10 & 14yr old. She is tolerant of child play & loves affection from adults & children. Lola plays gently with adults & children. Lola has resided with a cat from previous owner & it was stated she gets along very well with cats. Lola also resided with two dogs & tolerates their presence to a limit. Since Lola’s previous owner had Lola & a cat, she has struggled to transition into a home with other dogs. There will be occasions where she will show food aggression or has become territorial & will lunge and growl at the other dogs in order to warn them to stay away. Lola has not bitten or scratched a other animal or person within the past 10 days. BEHAVIOR: Lola has not shown aggression when owner touches her while she is eating. If another dog is around her while eating she will growl & bark at the other dog. Lola enjoys grooming & baths. She will bark to make owner aware someone unfamiliar is at the front of the home. Lola does not become aggressive when pushed or disturbed while sleeping. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW: Lola is best described as a friendly, affectionate & playful dog. Her activity level is high & she loves to go to the park. When owner is home she will follow the owner around. Lola enjoys playing with balls & squeaky toys. She also loves to play tug, Lola would do best in a family home. She enjoys eating dry food from brand Pedigree 2X daily. Lola is house trained & has never been crate trained. Lola is well behaved when left alone in yard or home. Lola is familiar with commands sit, stay & come. Owner stated Lola understands Spanish. When walked Lola pulls very hard. Lola prefers to go potty on grass. BEHAVIOR UPON INTAKE: Upon intake, Lola displayed a loose body wagging tail. When counselor approached Lola she became timid and tried to hide behind owner. Lola’s tail was tucked and she displayed whale eyes. Lola needs some time to get to know staff & will open up when she feels safe. Lola scanned negative.

01/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD

Lola came to us as an owner surrender on 1/15/16, due to a conflict that the owner had with Lola and his two other dogs. According to the owner Lola is friendly towards strangers and has lived with children. She is tolerant of child play & loves affection from adults & children. The owner has stated that Lola begins to growl and bark when another dog comes near her while she is eating, and will sometimes growl and lunge at the other dogs in home to keep them away from her area. Lola was a bit nervous and tense when entering the behavior room. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items, though having stiff body language on some of these items. She initially joins the game during the tag interaction, but near the end of the item she begins to mouth the leash with stiff body language. Lola was able to calm down quickly though and did not escalate. Due to the overall stiff body language and reported behavior in the home the behavior department believes that Lola can go to an experienced adopter with no children at this time. Furthermore, the behavior department recommends that Lola not go to a home with other dogs and should not be fed with other dogs in her proximity. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game with soft body language. Near the end of the item begins to mouth leash with stiff body language, but calms quickly. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff Flank squeeze 3. Dog closes mouth, begins to purse lips and becomes stiff Toy: 1. No interest.

When off leash with other dogs, Lola greets with a soft body and allows reciprocal sniffs but is slow in her movement signaling her nervousness. She appears to be sensitive to the proximity of the other dog but manages her uneasiness by moving away. 1/27 update: Lola greets with a low, soft body. She remains nervous throughout the interaction and avoids the helper dog each time he approaches.
