Loki
Hello, my name is Loki. My animal id is #16904. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 26-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – out of country.
Loki is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. Loki also has some dental disease, is somewhat overweight and Cryptorchid. Behaviorally, we suggest Loki would be best suited to a dog experienced home, without young children, due to a tendency to guard his food bowl.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Loki was a bit cautious with me at first, but quickly warmed up to me. He is ten years young and still has a spring in his step. He even hopped onto and off the sidewalk curb. You wouldn’t be able to guess his age by the way he moved. He is most likely house trained, as he eliminated once we were outside, so no need to worry about house training him. He likes to be held; he’ll be perfect for someone looking for a cuddle buddy, and for someone who doesn’t want to deal with the hassle of training a younger dog.
My medical notes are…
Weight: 11.375 lbs

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to his previous owner reporting that Loki growls when her food bowl is touched, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who can be trusted to leave Loki alone while eating can be considered.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Loki’s previous owner notes that he may growl when his food bowl touched or moved. We recommend that Beatty be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Loki’s mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Fearful: Loki is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Loki the option to walk away from any social interaction. Loki should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Loki’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Loki would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
