05/20/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Logan looks like he was designed by an artist…his coat is a lush and gorgeous amber and white, his ears are one of each, his soft sweet eyes match the amber, and his nose is also two toned. A designer’s dream! And more importantly, a dog lover’s dream!! Logan is lovely on leash, appears to be housetrained, ignores other dogs we pass in the park, poses for photos like a pro, and then joins me on the bench for some cuddles. We hugged so much a passerby yelled out, ‘get a room’! He’s soft and gentle, happy to hug and give kisses, enjoys some treats, and as we head back to the building, checks up often as we walk. As we approach his kennel, he’s scared of the loud barking dogs we pass, crouching a bit in uncertainty. But he’s fabulous, he’s amazing, he’s a lover boy who is ready to enjoy long walks and cuddles with his new bestie. Come meet him today! The line to meet this great dog starts on the right. Another volunteer writes: Logan is a dream of a dog in absolutely every way imaginable. He’s snuggly, he’s calm, he’s beautiful, he’s a rock star on a leash, he appears house trained, and did we mention how snuggly he is? He can’t get enough cuddles, but he’s never needy, happy to lie at your feet while you’re talking with another human, or join you on the bench for a close lean-in without ever interrupting the conversation. Logan is a dog who fills one’s heart with joy.
05/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/17/17 Unaltered Male,Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/19/2017 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins, mouths without applying pressure. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, sniffs assessor’s hand. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Logan was active, enthusiastic, and social throughout the assessment. Most of his activity was directed at getting closer to or maintaining proximity to the assessor. PLAYGROUP: Logan displayed discomfort during his initial interaction with dogs in the care center. Logan has begun to make progress during slow, monitored interactions with appropriate helper dogs. While Logan still displays defensive behavior, he has begun to open up and display brief interest in interaction once comfortable. The behavior department recommends that any follow up on Logan’s behavior around dogs be conducted as slow, supervised introductions with respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/17/17 During his initial medical exam Logan was tense and growling ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Logan so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Logan is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who pulls hard on leash. Logan will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long lasting chews and food puzzles in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behavior outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Logan jumped up during Tag item and mouthed without applying any pressure. It is recommended that default behaviors such as ‘leave it’, ‘sit/stay’, and ‘down’ are reinforced to teach him how to control his impusles instead of simply reacting. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
_X_Strength/leash pulling: Logan pulls hard on leash. It is recommended he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training not to pull on leash. _X_Fearful: While Logans remains human social, he may need time to interact at his own pace as he initially presents as a fearful dog. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.
05/20/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE

Logan moves away quickly, baring his teeth when approached. 5/22: Logan appears conflicted when interacting. He intially actively keeps distance from the helper dog while offering low growls. He eventually shows interest in re approaching, and offers brief playful bows bows. When the helper dog reciprocates play, Logan becomes tense and runs away.
