A volunteer writes:   I met Selene as she was bouncing around in playgroup having the best time!  She immediately came over to greet me, big smile and wagging tail as if saying, ‘come, join the party, we’re having a blast’.  She’s so cordial and welcoming of all, it’s like greeting a long lost best friend and having that immediate connection again.   Surrendered back to us as her person lost his home, we’re told she’s friendly and outgoing to strangers (check),
lived well with another dog, and enjoys playing with the cat she lived with. We’re told she doesn’t guard her things, and my favorite statement from her former owner is, “When woken from her slumber she looks at her owner and goes back to sleep.” (Sounds like my son!)How cute is that!!  We’re also told that she’s housetrained, needs to be walked just before bedtime for the last time, is also wee wee pad trained, and likes to get her teeth brushed!!!  When home alone she stays in a confined area, loves playing with toys, loves long walks and loves steak.   So, we have a playful, affectionate, cat friendly, good dental hygiene, non vegetarian little girl who also has the cutest snaggle tooth on the planet.  Why is Selene still here and not home with you?   Come meet her today!!

PROFILE :

Selene is friendly and outgoing towards strangers and loves to approach for a good jump and sniff. She has not spent time around children but is exuberant when playing with adults. She lives with another female Pittie and is relaxed and playful with her. She plays exuberantly and sometimes somewhat rough with other dogs. She lives with a cat as well and enjoys playing with her. She has never bitten another animal or human.

Selene isn’t bothered by loud noises and having her food bowl or treats taken away. When her owner takes away a toy, she thinks he’s trying to play. When pulled off of furniture, Selene gets off but will try to jump on again. When held from something she wants, she keeps pulling towards it. When awoken from her slumber, she looks at her owner and then goes back to sleep. She struggles getting into baths but once in, allows all handling. She enjoys being brushed but has never had her nails trimmed so it’s unknown how she would react. When someone unfamiliar approaches her home, Selene barks but warms up as
soon as they come in the door and is friendly. She is friendly with unfamiliar people that approach her humans.

Selene is friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable. She has a medium to high activity level and when ready to play, enjoys chase, chewing on bones, tugging on her rope and tires, and chewing on squeaky toys. Her owner loves how he can brush her teeth with no problem and how much she loves long walks. When he’s home, she typically follows him around and is kept mostly indoors. She sleeps on many places, her own doggy bed, her owner’s bed, and the couch. She is mostly house-trained and will have accidents a few times a week in the middle of the night when she’s last walked at 7pm. She is weewee pad trained and when outside, will go potty anywhere she can pick up a scent. When home alone, Selene stays in a confined area because she likes to chew on clothing that is on the floor. She has never been crate-trained but would benefit. She knows sit, stay, no, get out, and stop. She enjoys long walks at an average pace and only pulls when she’s exited. She eats Blue Buffalo dry, two cups, twice a day. She loves steak.

On intake, Selene had a loose and wiggly body. She jumped onto counselor and started lightly biting her hand and giving kisses. Her tail was wagging the whole time and she allowed collaring.

BEHAVIOR :

KNOWN HISTORY: None

Spayed, Owner Surrender (In previous home for one year)

SAFER ASSESSMENT:

Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted.

Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor.

Tag:  1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up lightly

Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy.

Summary: Selene displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment and mouthed the assessor at times with light pressure.  She was social throughout and allowed all handling.

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:

Summary

PLAYGROUP:

5/3: Selene greets politely and engages in soft play.  She offers correction when solicited more consistently with exuberant play styles.

5/4: Selene engages in soft play.  She greets non playful dogs politely.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:

Observed Behavior – very sweet girl, energetic but easy to handle/examine—I lifted this from the DVM intake, as this portion was blank.

ENERGY LEVEL:

We have no history on Selene so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment.  However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)

Potential challenges:

_X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Selene is a puppy and jumps up a lot on people.  It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.

_X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Selene has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Selene’s teeth make contact with skin).

A volunteer writes:

We love Liz!!! She’s a mouthy little mischief-makerwith enough non-stop energy to power a small city but her kisses, her snuggles and her heart of pure gold are truly beyond compare–this is the stuff puppy lovers dreams are made of! She likes to play and chew on toys but never guards her things and when it comes to treats she’ll gently lick them right from my hand, no teeth to be seen! Liz hasn’t yet mastered her commands but she already seems very house trained and with her people-focused, eager-to-please personality and an experienced adopter willing to put time and energy into teaching her, she’s going to grow into such a superstar adult. Personality with a capital P is what you’ll get when you adopt little Liz and she’s looking for an active family with Loyalty, Laughter and lots of Love to give to a deserving puppy like herself. So hop aboard the SS Lizzie, our favorite redhead already has her tiny paws on the helm and she’s ready to set sail for a lifetime of adventure!

BASIC INFO

Liz A1079280 is an approximately 5 month old American Pitbull Mix.  She is being surrendered to the shelter because the landlord does not allow dogs in the building.  Owner advised to return to original owner as it has only been a week that they have ownership, but stated they do not want her back.  Liz is fed Eukanuba dry dog food.  She is potty trained and is well behaved with children.  she does need training.  Owner never tried taking away food bowl, water bowl or toy away.

BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE

Liz was super hyperactive that we could not take her photo.  She easily went into the kennel.
