08/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hello, new human, do you have a minute to talk about ‘Tongue Out Tuesday’? My name is Lionel (Lio to my friends) and I’m an unofficial TOT Ambassador! Truth be told, I’m really more of a tongue out every day kind of guy, but I’ve noticed that humans like the whole theme day on social media thing (like, A LOT) and I always aim to please my public. Sometimes I miss the mark a little because I’m so excited to spread the good word about TOT that I need to jump for joy, or a toy, or whatever that is you’re holding in your hand and may I lick it now pleasepleaseplease? What do you mean cameras aren’t food? How can you tell unless you taste one? Silly human! Even though our first owner tied up my twin sister Lola and me and left us all alone in the park, I’m not one to hold a grudge, and when a new friend came along, untied us and took us home for a few days I made sure to be on my best behavior, especially around the little humans who lived in the house. Of course I got along wonderfully with Lola (we even slept together!) and though I can get a bit riled up by other excitable dogs, because she’s super chill and what they call ‘submissive’, we make a great pair. I already know how to be leashed and sit on command, and I’m pretty sure I have that whole house training thing down as well because, see for yourself–no dirty den for me! The vet says I’m 3 years old (which is like 25 in dog years) but I’m still a silly, energetic puppy at heart, and I’d really love to find an active new forever family who’ll keep me busy with plenty of walks, puzzle toys and play time. So whaddaya say, are you ready to join team Lio? I’m ready to celebrate this TOT and every single day of every single year for the rest of our long, happy lives together and all you have to do is say YES!
08/25/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lionel came to the care center as a stray so his history in a home is unknown. The person who found him had him for three days and reported that he was gentle with the three year old and ten month old children in the home and that he was housetrained. Upon intake, Lionel allowed all handling. For his relief walk, Lionel pulled a bit. In the assessment room he displayed high energy as well as some aniexty jumping on the assessor. He jumps up to lick the assessor’s face for Look, body loose, tail wagging. For Sensitivity, his body was soft; he leaned in, displaying high energy to get closer to the assessor. During Tag he jumps up, grabs the leash, and body checks the assessor. He moved his body away on the first Squeeze attempt so we moved to flank, which he did not respond to on either Squeeze attempt. He kept a firm grip on the Toy, body loose. The Behavior Team recommends that Lionel be placed in an Experienced home with no young children. He should have an in depth interaction with any older children in the home. Lionel will benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play, as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. It is recommended he receive positive reinforcement training. Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, he is panting. Tag: 3. Dog jumps up, grabs leash, and body checks the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Dog keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
08/25/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Lionel is initially tense-bodied upon approach. He loosens slightly, re-approaches to female greeter, then positions to mount her. His finder kept him and a female dog in his home for three days and reported they were “well behaved.” The behavior team recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing Lionel into a home with other dogs.
