10/29/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Unlike the lion in the Wizard of Oz, our Lion has a heart and simply needs someone to hear and feel it beating…..I did, and he’s awesome. Gorgeous, a bit nervous at first, Lion is easily leashed to head outside to go potty. He pulls on the leash a bit, and after a short walk we head to a pen for some off leash time. Lion comes close for comfort after exploring the pen, takes treats softly, goes back to exploring the pen, and then back to me for some cuddles…..and repeat, and repeat, and repeat. He’s a bit camera shy so getting a good picture of him didn’t happen, so you’ll have to take my word for how handsome and elegant our Lion is. We hugged a bit and when it was time to hop back into his kennel he did so easily. When I passed him later in the day he was so wiggle butt and happy to see me – I can just imagine him greeting his person coming home – we all should be greeted as if there was no one else in the world. Lion enjoys playing with other dogs, he runs carefree through the pen, coming to his person when play gets a little too rough for him. He’s an awesome dog, ready to find his new person or family who will let him adjust to everything gently and one step at a time. Is your heart as soft as Lion’s? Come meet him today.

10/28/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unknown [Unaltered, Stray] Other notes: During the intake Lion was showing fearful behavior and avoided interaction in the care center. SAFER ASSESSMENT: [10-28-16] Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, wagging tail. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Lion was difficult to remove from his kennel showing teeth, growling and lunges at the rope. Once he is out of his kennel he pulls hard on leash. During the behavior assessment Lion showed no concerns. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Lion is playful and exuberant with male and female dogs. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. Based on observation made in our care, the behavior department recommends slow introductions to any resident dogs in a home. Lion may be most compatible with other social, playful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: [10-28-16] During his initial exam, he was uncomfortable with tense body language, growling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Lion showed fearful behavior at intake and during his medical examination, but he gave appropriate warnings (growling). Before his assessment he was difficult to leash, but once leashed and out of the kennel his behavior changed significantly. It is unclear at this point whether this is a negative association with the leash, possible barrier reactivity, or fear of interacting. We recommend an experienced adopter who will help Lion build positive associations with strangers and new environments through slow, rewarding exposure. Strangers should be discouraged from approaching Lion, and Lion should be allowed to initiate interaction in his own time.
