05/01/17 13:10 Basic Information: Lilly is a 3 year old Boxer/American Pit Bull Terrier mix. She was bought from a breeder when she was 3 month old. She was surrendered because her previous owner is moving to an apartment that does not allow dogs. She has no known injuries or health problems. Behavior during intake: Lilly had a tucked tail but approached and sniffed counselor while counselor ignored her. She growled and hid behind her owner when counselor attempted to interact. She jumped on counselor when ignored. Collar was placed on by previous owner. Lilly allowed counselor to pet her back, however, her body was tense, her tail was tucked and she had back turned. When being led on a leash, should would walk calmly. When counselor attempted to pet her head, she ducked and gave a hard stare.

CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Lilly A1110658 KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/1/17 Unaltered female, Owner surrender (lived in previous home for 3 years) Other notes: Lilly had a tucked tail but approached and sniffed counselor. She growled and hid behind her owner when counselor attempted to interact. Lilly allowed counselor to pet her back, however, her body was tense, her tail was tucked. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/5/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs her shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 4. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand with a very fast head movement. Her body is tense, and she lip licks. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body tense, a bit fearful. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while moving hip away. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while moving hip away. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Lilly was nervous during her assessment. Lilly was difficult to position for up-close tactile handling, attempted to increase distance between dog and assessor, but tolerated handling with a tense body posture. She gave appropriate warnings of discomfort (Avoiding eye contact, whines, lip licks), and showed no aggression. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Lilly keeps to herself when interacting with large dogs, as well as small dogs. If they approach her, Lilly displays a lip curl. Lilly’s previous guardian did not provide any information on Lilly’s past behavior towards other dogs. Lilly has not yet been comfortable around novel dogs here at the Care Center, leading the Behavior Department to believe that Lilly would do best as the only dog in the home. If she is to be placed with other dogs, the resident dogs should be calm and respectful. All introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/2/17 Lilly very tense, fearful, low growling, resists some handling. Muzzled for safety. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Lilly so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. The movement appeared to be aimed at getting stopping the assessor’s activity/etc. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training technique for Lilly.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13)- Due to how uncomfortable Lilly is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful – Lilly was timid throughout the assessment and did not readily approach the assessor. She was tolerant of handling but needed considerable coaxing to position, and did not seem to warm up to the assessor during the assessment. She was curious and would approach to sniff, but moved away whenever the assessor tried to initiate contact

When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Lilly keeps to herself when interacting with large dogs, as well as small dogs. If they approach her, Lilly displays a lip curl. Lilly’s previous guardian did not provide any information on Lilly’s past behavior towards other dogs. Lilly has not yet been comfortable around novel dogs here at the Care Center, leading the Behavior Department to believe that Lilly would do best as the only dog in the home. If she is to be placed with other dogs, the resident dogs should be calm and respectful. All introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision. 5/3: Lilly is nervous, entering the pen with a lowered body and tense face. When the greeter dog moves quickly towards the gate to greet her, Lilly displays a lip curl -an appropriate display of canine body language indicating that she does not wish to socialize- and walks away. The greeter dog’s leash is held to give her a chance to approach, but Lilly chooses to keep to herself and never approaches the greeter dog. 5/4: Lilly was introduced to a female dog today and maintained her fearful posturing- tucked body and tail. She mostly kept to herself wandering the pen and avoiding the other dog. When the helper dog would walk by her, Lilly would display a lip curl and move away. 5/5: In a group of small male and female dogs, Lilly ignores the other dogs and chooses to only socialize with the little dog she was surrendered with.

Muzzled for safety. Evidence of trauma or cruelty – No. O: BARH. mm=pink, moist, CRT<2 s. HR=88, RR=24, BCS=5/9. ORAL: Not examined. EENT: No oculonasal discharge, no sneezing. Ears clean AU. H/L: Lungs clear, no murmurs/arrhythmias. No coughing. ABD: Tense, non-painful, no masses/organomegaly. UG: Female, no spay scar. Mild vulvar enlargement, no discharge. MS: Amb x 4, no lameness. INTEG: Full, clean haircoat. No skin lesions. NEURO: No neurologic deficits. PLN: No enlargements noted. A: Apparently healthy. P: OK for OVH surgery. Excellent prognosis.
