05/17/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lil Jon reminds me less of the famous rapper for whom he was ostensibly named and more of LITTLE Jon, Robin Hood’s most trusted companion and “legendary fellow outlaw.” Little Jon was brave, boisterous, the life of the party, and loyal to a fault. Yes, I think that suits our Jon quite well. When I first meet Sir Jon I’m instantly charmed by his good looks. That silver coat, those warm, amber eyes, and those EARS! Jon’s adorable, velveteen triangles are both floppy and alert at once, and it’s all I can do to keep myself from rubbing them without end. Next, I’m taken by Jon’s exuberance, yes, those “boisterous” ways. When you’re as handsome and strapping as this 3 year-old boy, you’re accustomed to doors flying open when you near, and not being forced to wait about. No, Jon has no patience for my dilly-dallying as I rummage for more treats. He nudges my hand firmly with that beautiful muzzle, “Faster, please!” Jon was found by police and brought into our care as a stray so, unfortunately, his previous experiences are unknown. As I watch him toss his squeaky toy high in the air I imagine what his life might have been like. I picture him running with his pack — possibly people, possibly pups — all of them his “merry men.” I envision those gorgeous ears flopping as he jumps and plays, always keeping an eye on those closest to him, forever the leader he was born to be. Of course, I’ll never know if I’m right; if what I’ve pictured for him is true. But somehow, I think it is. Lil Jon, the loyal leader, the life of the party, the outlaw. Jon is waiting to steal your heart at Manhattan’s ACC.
05/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lil Jon came into our center after police found him as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He showed no concerning behaviors during his initial medical exam. Lil Jon was calm on leash during his relief walk, slight pull. He pulled out of assessor’s hands on all three attempts at Look item, shoulder rubbing. Lil Jon leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, ears back. He was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, focused on other stimuli, sniffing the room. Lil Jon did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He kept a firm grip on Toy, became still and a bit tense when approached by assess-a-hand. Lil Jon approached the helper dog a bit quickly, tail above spine level, ears forward, lip lick. The Behavior Team feels Lil Jon would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn the command ‘drop it’ as well as trade up games. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth, ears back. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog does not pull back paw, high energy and movement in between attempts Toy 1: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body still and a bit stiff when approached by assess-a-hand. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, lip lick, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
05/17/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Lil JOn has displayed mostly sexually motivated behavior. At times he has briefly displayed play interest, though offered correction when jumped on during. During his first interaction, he began to vocalize in response to correction, but this has not been observed recently. He arrived as a stray, so in-home behaviors are unknown. He has not been introduced to a male while in our care. The behavior department recommends a pre adoption interaction to ensure compatability with a resident dog. When off leash with other dogs, Lil Jon is tense and has raised hackles. He displays sexually motivated behavior and begins to bark/vocalize when corrected. 5/18 update: Lil Jon is sexually motivated and engages in play with intent to mount. He is persistant with attempting to mount despite correction from another dog. Lil Jon offers a correction when jumped on during play. 5/19 update: Lil Jon is persistantly sexually motivated. At times he briefly bounces to solicit with intent to mount. 5/20 update: Lil Jon continues to exhibit these behaviors when off leash with other dogs.
