12/19/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: The holidays are happiest when you’re young. Lights shine brighter, hugs from family last longer, and the excitement of what lies inside those crinkled, metallic boxes is enough to keep young, tired eyes wide awake for weeks. When you’re young life is like one of those boxes. It’s beautiful and it’s exciting. And though its contents may be a mystery right up until the very end, its possibilities are endless and it is full of promise to be sure. This will be Lil J’s 10th holiday. That’s 10 years’ worth of snow, 10 years of happy giggles muffled through a frosted pane, and 10 years of warm and filling family meals wafting out a kitchen filled with love. When I meet Lil J there is no question as to her age. Not because of the flecks of grey that cover her ears or her slow, staccato gait. Not even because of a scar right round her long neck, now healed-over and resigned. It is her look. Sad, yes, but more healed-over and resigned. She is effortlessly gentle, leans her head into my hand when I find a soft spot under her chin, and sits quietly at my feet when I produce a bag of snacks never dreaming of taking one unless explicitly sent her way. The holidays may be happiest when you’re young but happiness can be found at any age. This holiday season I’m hoping for many things but one is that one of those crinkled, metallic boxes is filled with something special for Lil J. A home, a family, a promise, and a chance. Lil J is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
