A volunteer writes: “She’s such a good dog”, a volunteer said to me before I had the chance to meet Miss Liberty. And now that I have, I second that, ‘she’s such a good dog’. She’s also beautiful in her lush white coat, her amber eyes sparkle, her leash manners are lovely, she knows ‘sit’, and takes treats gently. Up front in her kennel, her tail wags at the prospect of making a new friend with a leash, and out she hops ready for a walk. Snow and cold didn’t bother her and she allowed me to put a coat on her against the cold. She’s so white she’d get lost in a snow drift if it weren’t for those sparkling eyes and cute black nose. In playgroup she enjoys soft play with both males and females. Low key, gentle, and easy to be with, she’s a perfect model for photos making soft eye contact as she posed, Liberty is hoping to meet her new family today.
BEHAVIOR:
KNOWN HISTORY: None
Unaltered, stray
Other notes: Liberty allowed all handling during intake.
SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/6/2017
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, mouth closed
Tag: 2. Dog follows at end of leash, a bit distracted, becomes playful mid game.
Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed
Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, then walks away.
Summary: No concerning behavior noted during assessment, but would walk slowly, head low at times past other staff. She may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction.
DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:
Social: These dogs truly enjoy the company of other dogs. They generally get along with all other dogs and can tolerate even very rude or inappropriate behavior.
PLAYGROUP:
Liberty engages in soft, bouncy play with male and female dogs of all sizes. She arrived to the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department feels that Liberty could go to a home with another polite, respectful dog.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/4/2017
Liberty was nervous but warmed up and allowed all handling during her exam. She was a bit head shy.
