A volunteer writes: Seeing Liberty curled up comfortably in a “top cage” (usually reserved for housing small breed dogs) is among the cutest things I’ve ever seen. He weighs in at itty bitty and people coo “Hey puppy!” from across the street on our walks, but this guy is full grown! He has a quirky back leg (it looks like maybe it was broken and healed on its own) and big wide-set eyes like a little doll — the CUTEST. He is on the shy and timid side, but simultaneously on the sweeter than sweet side! He bashfully comes to the front of his cage and lets me pick him up like a baby (and doesn’t wiggle or protest when I can’t help but carry him longer than necessary!). He lowers his body if there are big noises or movements, but softly swooshes his tail back and forth when I coax him over to me. He seems to have some housetraining and to be interested in the other dogs we pass. He loves treats and takes them nicely and seems comforted by petting. He seems very submissive and I’m sure will blossom in a home environment. Please come check him out at Brooklyn ACC!
07/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Liberty came into the shelter as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. Upon intake it was noted Liberty was easy to handle and maintained a soft body. During SAFER Liberty came into the assessment room loose and a bit shy, he had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor, he allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Liberty was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Liberty was easy to handle when engaged with the item; with a slow approach. Liberty appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “” adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is semi tucked position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1 Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1 Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy 1: No interest.
07/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE

Liberty was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. 7/16: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Liberty greets the other dog with a low body and tucked tail. He becomes more relaxed as he interacts with the other dog, muzzle-licking and following her around.
