11/20/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Leo is a young man who was found as a stray. Leo was most likely a pet just yesterday…We don’t know what his past life was like, but he was quite nervous upon arrival and several days afterward, Leo relaxed quite a bit and allowed me to outfit him with a scarf and pet him. He loves treats and we certainly made friends thanks to turkey jerkies… Leo pulls a little on the leash, does his business with a moderate amount of marking and sits beautifully on command, even wagging his tail as he knows that he will get more food. There is something about Leo’s face that is endearing and reminds me of a little boy, a little boy who deserves to be cared for and loved. Let’s hope that better days lay ahead for him. Leo needs experienced and understanding new owners who with patience and love will help him to feel comfortable in his new home so he will be the wonderful dog he is meant to be. Come and meet Leo at the Manhattan Care Center and offer him the chance of a caring and loving home.
11/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/17/2016 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body is tense; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body tense, mouth closed, ears back, lip lick Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched, follows slowly Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff, tail tucked. Flank squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog, but appears interested, body not stiff. Summary: Leo was very fearful in kennel, may low growl at approaching rope/leash, but will take all treats. He is very treat motivated, though nervous he allowed all collaring, leashing, and positioning during SAFER assessment. Would do best with a slow approach/slow introduction, with treats. PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/13/16 During his initial medical examination, Leo appeared tense and growled, struggling throughout. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful (Leo has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers; at times will avoid interaction and shy away from direct-touch. Leo may easily startle and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.)
