04/27/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Leo is a bit of a mystery man! He arrived as a stray with two other dogs that look like they could be his siblings. Everything about his mouth is cute — the overbite, the floppy lips, the one of a kind smile…everything! He can be a little nervous, but seems very sweet. He softly whines in his cage and will prop his paws up on the door. He seems housebroken, is very easy to handle, “sit”s like a champ and takes treats nicely (though he likes them broken up into small pieces to make things easier on the overbite!). When I squeak a ball he tilts his head and pushes it with his nose when I throw it. He hasn’t been demanding of affection with me, but wags his tail when I talk to him, lets me pet him all over, and seems to take comfort in having company. Mostly Leo seems like a really good boy in a strange place. He’s hoping to find a place to call home…please come see him at Brooklyn ACC!
04/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Leo came to us as a stray so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed in the shelter environment. Leo pulled slightly on the leash for his relief walk, but had soft body language. He was very interested in exploring his surroundings when entering the behavior room, but did show some interest in interacting with the assessor. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. Leo did have some fearful, tense and trembling body language during the look and sensitivity items. During the tag interaction Leo was distracted and more interested in his surroundings than engaging in play. He showed no interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. Throughout the assessment Leo would whine vocally which seems to do with his anxiety. We recommend Leo go to a home with a stable environment and experienced adopter. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is trembling and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is low, body a bit tense, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: No interest. When off leash with other dogs, Leo greets and wanders the pen.
