Leo

Hello, my name is Leo. My animal id is #16248. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old.

Details on my behavior are…

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

Date of intake:: 12/16/2017

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Date of assessment:: 12/21/2017

Look:: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body posture is stiff and fearful, tail is low and not moving. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity:: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.

Tag:: 5. Dog growls, snaps, or tries to bite.

Toy:: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.

Summary:: Leo approached the assessor in the assessment room with a tense, trembling body. When touched during tag, he snapped, sot the rest of the handling portion of the assessment was omitted.

Summary (1):: 12/19: When introduced off leash to dogs, Leo is fearful and keeps to self.

Summary (2):: 12/20-21: Leo follows and attempts to mount female dogs.

Date of intake:: 12/16/2017

Summary:: Leo allowed handling.

Date of initial:: 12/18/2017

Summary:: Leo allowed all handling.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Leo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Leo is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Leo has been very fearful at the care center and has displayed a potential for defensive aggression. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Leo is fearful at the care center and has growled and snapped while being handled. It is important to always go slow and give Leo the option to walk away from any social interaction. Leo should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Leo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Leo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
