I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 10/11/2016 from NY 10002, owner surrender reason stated was BITEPEOPLE.

10/11/16 17:25 Legend is a 1 year old male American Pitt Bull Terrier who is being surrendering due to a biting incident. Owner’s 5 year old son was bit on the face. Owner got Legend from a friend 7 months ago. Owner stated Legend has no medical issues but has never seen a vet. Legend is friendly around strangers. He has lived with kid’s ages 2, 5, and 8. He was playful, respectful, and tolerant with the kids and was an emotional support animal for one. Besides the one biting incident he would let the kids do whatever they wanted with him. He plays in a gentle manner with kids and adults. He lived with a 3 year old Pomeranian. He was very curious and playful with this pet. The Pomeranian did not tolerate his advances. He would meet other dogs on dog parks or walks and he was very playful around them. He has never lived or been around cats. He bit owner’s 5 year old child on 10/10/16. The bite was not provoked as per owner. Owner was kneeling down talking to the child and Legend came over and bit him on the face. Owner stated Legend has no behavior issues and is not bothered by loud or sudden noises. Legend does not guard any food, any kind of treats, or toys. He is not bothered if pushed of furniture, if held, if disturbed while sleeping, if brushed, or if someone unfamiliar approaches the owner. He is afraid of bath but tolerates it. He will bark if someone knocks on the door. Owner has never trimmed his nails. Legend is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful with a medium to very high activity level. Owner stated Legend loved to cuddle. He will follow owner around when home. He likes to play with balls, stuffed toys, and chew style toys. He likes to play fetch and tug. He was kept mostly indoors and slept in owner’s bed. He was fed Blue Wilderness dog food, wet and dry food. He was fed 2 cups of dry food in the morning and one can of wet food at night. He is house trained and will go potty on wee-wee pads indoors and on grass outdoors. He is kept in a care when left home alone. He will do well inside the crate for 8 hours or so. He is never left in a yard. He knows command sit and give paw. He goes running on a leash with owner and up and down 17 flights of stairs for exercise. He pulls very hard on a leash and is never walked off the leash. Legend tolerated all handling during intake. He sat and gave paw on command with a treat. He was scared of the camera.

KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults/Children ages 2,5, and 8, a small dog. Behavior toward children: Playful, respectful, and tolerent Behavior toward dogs: Playful Behavior toward cats:Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: Bite to the five year old child. Legend approached the child and bit him in the face causing lacerations that required stitches. Housetrained: Will go outside on grass and on wee wee pads. Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, and playful with a medium to very high activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/20/16 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging, play bowing. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans in and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, lip lick, slow wagging tail. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, play bows, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Dog keeps a firm grip, loose wiggly body. Summary: Based on nature of intake, recommend an adult home only. Legend is a high energy dog who will benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, and play. He showed no concerning behvior during his SAFER assessment. PLAYGROUP: Legend is introduced off leash to other dogs on a muzzle, due to DOH status. He offers a few playful bows to the greeter dog, then wanders off to explore the pen. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/11/16 During his initial medical exam Legend allowed handling without issue. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience _X_No children (under 13)(See known bite history; for this reason, we advise against a home with children and believe Legend may benefit best from an adult only home.) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised.)
