08/05/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: If you’re going to have a name like “Legend” you had better bring a few things to the table. 1. You had better be exceedingly sweet. So sweet that you shower your volunteer with kisses the moment she plops down on the ground beside you after a long summer’s walk. 2. You should also be patient. So patient that you stand quietly by your volunteer’s side for FAR too long while she fumbles and searches her bag for treats that have inexplicably run off. 3. You should be devilishly handsome. How handsome? You should be blessed with a coat as white as snow, a strawberry/chocolate nose as cute as a button, and extraordinary ears that are not only perfectly floppy, they come with their very own perfect polka dots. 4. You might also want to sit calmly in your kennel and walk slowly right by your volunteer’s side even though Nature has been calling for quite some time. 5. You should be charming, silly, adorably shy, playful, elegant, curious, and bright. In short, you should be all things to all people. Now — strolling the halls of Manhattan’s ACC, I ask myself, “where could I ever I find a dog like that?” Then suddenly, “WOOF!” I turn my head. “I AM LEGEND!,” a snowy-coated masterpiece from his kennel exclaims. And oh yes, he most certainly is. Legend is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC
08/03/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Legend walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Legend had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. Legend came in as stray. He stayed with his finder for a night and was around a puppy pitbull mix and a 1 1/2 year old baby and played well with both but sometimes jumped on the baby when playing and had to be de-escalated. Legend did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest.
