05/23/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lavinia reminds me of the she-wolf who raised Romulus and Remus (a bronze artwork in Rome). She is really statuesque and beautifully carved. Like her, Lavinia fed a whole brood not that long ago. She seems to have been well cared for. She is young, beautifully dressed in a shiny ebony coat, reasonably well fed and healthy looking. She looks very serious, and we understand why. Still, I am hoping to see a little smile on her face in a day or two. Lavinia is what we call “a velcro dog”. Whenever she can, she will “attach” to her caretaker, give the best hugs, pat your face to get your attention and kiss galore…she is needy and loving. She likes treats and even sits for them. In the street, she pulls on the leash as I expected from a dog who is a bit lost, but she does not miss the opportunity to do her business. Like many females who have been bred a lot or recently, because of the maternal instinct and the need to survive, Lavinia is uncomfortable amidst other dogs. Maybe there are just too many, and she needs to get used to the care center and its numerous inhabitants. Lavinia is very dear, loving and lovable. We dream for her of a home where she will feel safe and loved for what she really is…a sweet and loyal pet. Lavinia is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.
05/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: 5/21/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/23/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is tucked. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 4. Dog raises her lip with bared teeth. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Lanivia appeared fearful during her assessment but was social towards the assessor, soliciting attention. When her paw was touched, she lifted her lip and showed teeth. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Lavinia has required to warm up and become comfortable approaching and interacting with calm dogs in the care center. She has not displayed play interest. Slow, supervised introductions are recommended between Lavinia and respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/21/17 During her initial medical exam, Lavinia was very tense and cowering. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Lavinia so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Though Lavinia has displayed some social behavior with select handlers, she remains uncomfortable with some forms of approach and will display all appropriate warning signals. Lavinia has bared teeth and growled multiple times at handlers when stressed and uncomfortable.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Lavinia’s display of discomfort with some handling, we recommend an adult only home. _X_New Hope Only: Due to the fear and avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we believe Lavinia may benefit best from placement with a New Hope partner who can assess her behavior further in a home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Lavina has bared teeth when her paws were handled, showing an uncomfortability with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Lavinia’s paws at this time and be cautious when touching her in other areas as we do not know where she may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Lavinia to be more comfortable with this _X_Fearful: Lavinia is fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Lavinia the option to walk away from any social interaction. Lavinia should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Lavinia’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Lavinia would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
