05/15/17 18:35 During intake Lavendar was very friendly and was licking the counselor with a low fast wagging tail. She was also jumping on the counselor and giving kisses. The police who brought her in said she was very friendly and went into the crate easily.

A volunteer writes: Just in time for the warm days of spring, the perennial favorite that is Lavender has officially arrived! It’s a well-known fact that lavender boosts your mood, improves your sleep, even helps to heal burns and wounds. Well, one has to imagine, with this 1 year-old blooming beauty at your side, you’ll be feeling your best, contentedly well-rested, and whistling dixie all day long. First things first: “WOW. Is she gorgeous.” Ready those ears to hear that early and often, as finding a pup with a face like Lavender’s is to find a needle in a bale of hay. Second? Hunker down and buckle in for some fun because spring has sprung, as does Lavender at the very suggestion of a walk. So walk we do, well maybe more like run, as Lavender hurries us to the corner walk where she promptly tends to business. “Beautiful!!!” There it is again. But Lavender, possibly sensing treats and toys are nigh, has already ushered us back towards the yard and through shelter’s doors. Out in the grass, our blushing blossom blossoms, hopping up for treats, posing effortlessly for photos, and nudging my palm insistently for pets when I (wrongly) find myself distracted. “Who is that? What a face!” Third time’s the charm. And yes, what a face, what a girl, what a love. What are you waiting for? Come meet Lavender today. Lavender is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.

CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Lavender A1112114 KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/15/178 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/15/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up on assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Lavender displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment, jumping up on the assessor repeatedly in social manner. She was social throughout and allowed all handling. Social: These dogs truly enjoy the company of other dogs. They generally get along with all other dogs and can tolerate even very rude or inappropriate behavior. PLAYGROUP: Lavender is bouncy and playful when engaging with dogs in the care center. The behaviro department feels Lavender would be compatible with other social, playful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/15/17 During her initial medical exam, Lavender was active, social, and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Lavender so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Lavender was extremely jumpy on her assessment. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.

The behaviro department feels Lavender would be compatible with other social, playful dogs. 5/16: When introduced off leash to dogs in the care center, Lavender engages in bouts of running chase play. She often takes breaks between play to seek out attention from human handlers. 5/18: Lavender continues to engage in running chase play with both male and female dogs.
