05/01/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hey girl, feel my bandanna…know what it’s made of? Boyfriend material. My name’s Larry and no, I don’t come here often but I’m sure glad to see I’m not the only one classing up the joint today. How great is it that we happened to meet, you holding all those treats and looking for love and me hungry for food and snuggles? Might be time to answer your phone because I’m pretty sure that’s destiny calling. It’s so refreshing to find someone who likes spending time in the great outdoors! I’m an outdoorsy kind of guy myself and enjoy long sunset walks on the beach…through the park…to the store…out in the backyard…I guess I just really enjoy discovering new things, y’know? Sure, I can sit and stay, keep a clean den and walk calmly on leash like all those other good dogs, but when it comes to lovin’ on my people, I like to think my technique stands out from the crowd. Literally. Because I give the best stand-up hugs ever. Also lap snuggles and maybe, when we know each other better, I might sneak in a few kisses as well. All this, and the staff here tell me I’m free to go to almost any experienced home. But girl, there’s really only one place I wanna be and that’s wherever you are. So how about we get together and take a one-way ride aboard the Larry express to Snuggle City? Population: Just me…and you.
04/24/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Larry came into our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. During intake, Larry was relaxed with loose body and allowed all handling. He growled in his cage but once outside of kennel allowed all handling during his initial medical exam. Larry pulled slightly on leash during his relief walk. He was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room, jumping up to lick assessor’s face. Larry allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail wagging, relaxed. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, mouth open. Larry followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, settled easily at end. He pulled his paw back on first Squeeze attempt, moved his legs and soft body away the second attempt. Larry playfully engaged with Toy, kept a firm grip with loose body when approached by assess-a-hand. When off leash with other dogs, Larry is slow to take correction from the helper dog and needs handler intervention. The Behavior Team feels Larry would do best with an Experienced adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth, tail wag Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back paw quickly Squeeze 2: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Larry is slow to take correction from the helper dog and needs handler intervention.
04/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Larry has displayed mostly sexually motivated behaviors, but at times has shown interest in play with female dogs. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog while in our care. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction for Larry before placement into a home with another dog. He arrived as a stray so in home behaviors are unknown. When off leash with other dogs Larry is sexually motivated. When offered correction from the helper dog he continues to mount and needs correction from handlers to cease. 4/27 update: Larry continues to display mostly sexually motivated behavior 4/28 update: Larry engages in play with a solicitous female. 4/29 update: Larry keeps to himself in the yard.
