09/06/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: From tip to tail, I love Lando! And really, what’s not to love? His one-up-one-down ears and that snuggly body are adorable. He’s got a short-legged strut and confidence with strangers that make every walk easy as pie, not to mention some top notch ‘business’ skills which he demonstrates frequently. His independent spirit and eagerness to explore mean he entertains himself like a pro and his energy levels are perfect, not too high and not too low. Lando’s a charming character who knows what he wants (treats treats treats!) but isn’t pushy about asking for them and he’ll sit on command to gently accept snacks from my hand or, if I take too long to give them up, stand on his hind legs to try for better access. He’s a good boy with what I call ‘rough noble’ manners, give them a little polish and he’ll be quite the gentleman. Independent as he is, Lando very much appreciates snuggles and happily hopped up beside me on the bench for a body massage, a kiss exchange and some relaxation time spent just watching the world go by. He aced his behavior assessment with top scores but has shown some not-so-polite behavior when close to other dogs (though he arrived with his sister, Egypt) and would be most comfortable in an experienced home where he can pick up some training tips on how to meet and greet in a friendlier way. A black dog with a heart of pure gold, Lando will capture yours as soon as you meet him. Visit our Manhattan Care Center today and let the charm offensive begin!
09/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/31/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/3/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Lando displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment. PLAYGROUP: 9/1: Lando became very tense and fixated at the gate greeting a female. He was muzzled for his first off leash interaction. Off leash with a female dog England greeted with slightly tense body then attempts to mount repeatedly. When the female dog corrects him, he shakes and wanders the pen. He also growls while passing another more active female in another pen. Due to limited observation, we recommend a single dog residence for Lando until follow up on his behavior can be conducted at slow pace with dogs who are well socialized. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Lando had a relaxed body and wagging tail. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/1/17 During his initial medical exam, Lando was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Lando so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Lando has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them and growling. Lando may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
