05/01/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/01/17 16:45 BASIC INFO Laika A1110692 is an APBT Mix of unknown age. She is being surrendered to the shelter because the owner left her behind in an apartment that they were renting 3-4 days ago. The landlord of the building entered the apartment and removed Laika and brought her to ACCNYC. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE Laika growled at Counselor when she went to be scanned for microchip.

05/03/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “You like-a what you see?” And how could I not? I’d be hard-pressed to think of a more commanding presence or statuesque beauty than 4 year-old Laika. Her silver coat positively glistens as she happy-dances in her kennel at the prospect of a walk, and once she’s easily leashed she sets her voluptuous frame upon the ground and off for a spin we go. At 80 pounds, Laika is a strong and healthy girl, so some pulling on the leash of course is to be expected. We pull over momentarily for a pause on a bench, at which point gorgeous Laika jumps up to rest her paws on my legs, grinning as I give her a scratch. But after a while Laika grows antsy — she’s a woman on the move! — so we set off on our journey again. And as we pass a few other pups our shimmering beauty releases a flurry of “woof woof woof!”s, but once they move safely out of sight she settles into herself again. Free in a pen, Laika shows off her “sit” the moment I produce a treat before we two eventually just enjoy the breezy afternoon in the grass under the sun. A creature as magnificent as Laika would fill any experienced home or heart with love, and with both so full, you’ll never want for another. No, Laika is meant to be the star of the show, the apple of your eye, and the object of your affection. Come and meet her today. Laika is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.

05/09/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Laika A1110692 KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/1/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/3/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Laika displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment. She was social throughout and allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: Laika displayed highly concerning behavior during interaction with dogs in the care center. Laika rushed in after the helper dog with a tense body, silently running after while snapping, eventually attempting to bite. Due to the intensity of the behavior observed, in addition to reactivity on leash, the behavior department strongly advises against housing Laika with other dogs. Caution and vigilance should be exercised when walking Laika through areas of high dog traffic. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/2/17 During her initial medical exam, Laika was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Laika so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Single-pet home _X_Recommend no dog parks _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the intensity/severity of Laika’s dog reactivity, the behavior department believes placement with a New Hope rescue would benefit her best at this time to further assess this behavior in a stable environment before permanent placement in a home. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended when introducing or exposing Laika to new and unfamiliar situations Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Laika has been observed to react to other dogs and on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Laika may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Laika is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. Her adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that she be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish her strength through leverage and that she be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.

05/03/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Laika displayed highly concerning behavior during interaction with dogs in the care center. 5/3: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog Laika rushes in and runs after him, mouthing then snapping toward his neck with increasing intensity. Handlers are able to interrupt and remove her from the pen safely. 5/9: Laika is muzzled for her second interaction. She rushes in with a tense body, silently chases after the female helper while snapping and attempting to bite at her neck.

Laika’s a beauty! Poor girl, left by her owners. I’ll never understand how someone can just walk out of an apartment/house, leaving a family pet behind with no intention of returning. Laika seems to be adjusting though – she has a lovely volunteer write-up and she’s so enthusiastic in her video. While she may not be comfortable with other dogs, she surely enjoys the company of humans!

This beautiful girl was not a stray she was abandoned! She was let down by her owner, then the killers at the NYACC who did not give her much of a chance at all. What a disgrace to kill such a gorgeous, energetic love bug! :'(
