Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Lady became mouthy at times during her assessment when being touched. During sensitivity and squeeze, she quickly flipped her head towards the assessor’s hand. PLAYGROUP: Due to history, Lady is muzzled for off leash introduction to the helper dog. Lady displays a loose body, engages in bouts of bouncy, running, play. The behavior department recommends that Lady be allowed time to decompress in a new home before immediate introduction to dogs outside the care center. Please see GROUPBEHAVIOR for more information. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 5/23/17 Upon intake, Lady did not allow handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/23/17 During her initial medical exam, Lady was social and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Lady’s previous owner described her as having a low level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Lady’s bite history, as well as her history of resource guarding and lunging at people, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Lady be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Lady to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Lady to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Lady presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Lady’s previous owner notes that he may growl when her food bowl is approached. We recommend that Lady be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Lady’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Lady has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Lady’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Reactivity towards other humans was noted by the previous owner (lunging). She has bitten a person who came near her puppies. Because this appears to present a challenge outside of the care centers, guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly advised to assess this behavior and modify/manage as needed. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: In her previous home Lady was reported to be reactive to other dogs and to lunge at human passerby. Lady may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
06/14/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
The previous owner of Lady cites a previous bite incident involving another dog. During an incident in the previous home: Lady recently gave birth to a litter of puppies, and was later introduced to a puppy that was not her own. When the unfamiliar puppy began the nurse from Lady, she became uncomfortable, resulting in her biting the puppy. Due to history, Lady is muzzled for off leash introduction to the helper dog. Lady displays a loose body, engages in bouts of bouncy, running, playful behavior. Lady’s former owners also described her as having lived with two other dogs in the home. Owners report that Lady was initially relaxed while engaging, but would later become “reactive”. The behavior department recommends that Lady be allowed time to decompress in a new home before immediate introduction to dogs outside the care center. Follow up introductions should be supervised, and conducted slowly to respectful dogs.
