06/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lady is quite a mature name for a nine month old puppy. And it seems Lady has had to “grow up” quicker than most dogs. In her short time on earth, she was not only abandoned by her owner, but her finder, who held her for about 2 weeks also had to surrender her. When I approached Lady’s kennel, she didn’t behave like the typical puppy of her age. While most would be bouncy, butt shaking and tail wagging, Lady was hesitant, wary of my presence; she dodged my leash, hovering near the back of her cage. With some coaxing, she came out and easily followed me through the center. Lady seems housebroken, walks beautifully on the leash and was respectful toward another dog that walked along side of her. Her finder stated that she was mostly gentle with the children in the home but could get pushy when the youngest had food in her hand. When I stopped and sat with her on the sidewalk, the depth of all she has gone through in her young age was apparent. As I went to pet her, she lowered her head, uncertain of my touch. For the first few minutes, she stood a number of feet away from me, but it didn’t take long to persuade her to come closer, and it was almost a matter of time that she was next to me, not so much shying from my touch, but almost looking forward to it. The amount of progress that Lady made in a short amount of time with me is a testament to how well she’d do in a quiet, loving home, ready and willing to help her rebuild her confidence. Ask to meet her today.
06/03/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lady previously lived with adults and children the ages 2, 3 and 9 years old. The owner stated Lady got along well with the children; she was playful, gentle and tolerant of them. The owner mentioned Lady would bark at the youngest when she had food in her hands; she did nibble on the youngest hand once but did not break skin. It was reported by the owner when unfamiliar people approach the house or the yard Lady would bark growl and lunge forward. The owner describes Lady as affectionate, sweet, playful and a cuddlier. The owner also stated Lady is house trained, has a medium activity level and well behaved when home alone. At intake it was reported Lady was calm and allowed all handling. During SAFER Lady came into the assessment room shy and fearful, she was social towards the assessor with a slow approach. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Lady quickly turns away from touch and attempts to exit during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Lady was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns stated from the previous owner Lady would bark at the youngest child and nibble on her hand when she had food (no broken skin), the behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter with no young children. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is tense and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly turns quickly away when touched, or repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Dog is crouching, tail is tucked, mouth closed, body stiff. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. No interest.
