05/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Lovely Lady is looking for some good luck to come her way today, and doesn’t that breathtakingly gorgeous face just make you want to give her everything her heart desires? She’s a shy girl unused to the noise and bustle of the Care Center but still keen to get outside for a walk, and when I move slowly, offer gentle petting, and praise her with sweet talk, she soon hops up beside me on the bench for soft snuggles and some careful contemplation of all the goings-on in the yard. Lady doesn’t miss a trick and notices everything from sparrows pecking the ground to the boisterous puppy two doors down, but she’s not one to make a fuss (or a peep!) over any of it, and prefers simply seeing the sights, breathing the fresh spring air and feeling a comforting human presence by her side. Lady arrived with nice comments from her former owner who described her as friendly and mellow with low energy levels, and she walks very nicely too, sticking close by my side (a little too close at times!) and doing all her business tout suite once we hit the street. She passes dogs well on leash but is currently uncomfortable meeting them face to face, and would do best as the only pup in her new home, at least for now. We’re told Lady is shy with strangers and it’s true for sure, but in a quiet home with reassuring routines and a new family who’ll give her all the time, space and TLC she craves, I’ve no doubt she’ll blossom like a delicate flower. Low-key, low energy and loving? Sounds like the perfect pet for city living to me!
05/11/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Lady came into our center on 5/9/2016. It is reported she is a little shy around strangers. She is described as friendly and mellow with a low activity level. During intake, Lady allowed all handling. Lady walked well on leash for her relief walk, no pulling. She appeared uncomfortable upon entering SAFER assessment room, requiring a few minutes to warm up. Lady held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, relaxed. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears back. Lady followed at the end of the leash slowly, body a bit low, unresponsive to the touch. She approached the assessor at the end of the game. Lady did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She showed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing a few times but then losing interest, not engaging in play. When off leash with other dogs, Lady is nervous and tense. She offers a lip curl when approached, and when the other dog attempts to mount. Due to her level of discomfort, the Behavior Team feels Lady would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. She may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, possibly with treats. Lady would initially benefit from going home to a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and know what to expect in her new home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, mouth closed, ears back Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, then walks away. dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Lady is nervous and tense. She offers a lip curl when approached, and when the other dog attempts to mount.
05/11/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Lady does not engage with other dogs and typically keeps to herself. She is uncomfortable with a sexually motivated male and will offer correction. Her owner reports she has never been around other dogs, so any in-home behaviors are unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing her into a home with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Lady is nervous and tense. She offers a lip curl when approached, and when the other dog attempts to mount. 5/12 update: Lady is introduced to a polite female, but she mostly keeps to herself and ignores interaction.
