04/15/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: The Urban Dictionary defines Kyle as “the most amazing person you’ll ever meet”. Well, OK. Let me introduce you to our Kyle. You know the type, he’s perfectly groomed, his coat shines with good care, his nails are trimmed, his leash manners are lovely, he seems to be housetrained, he takes treats gently, and he wags his tail at dogs we pass in the park. Kyle is also a #1 squirrel spy, as no squirrel passes us without getting his attention — no pulling towards them, just a head swivel as they go by. Back in the building, Kyle wags his tail in happy greeting at everyone in the lobby, greeting each as a friend. This gorgeously friendly boy patiently waiting for his new family to find him. He hated going back into his kennel and I promised him it wouldn’t be for long. Please help make my promise to him come true.
04/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/13/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/16/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up on and lightly mouths assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Kyle displayed a high level of activity and movement on his assessment, and was a bit mouthy at time. He was social throughout and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with another dog, Kyle engages in gentle play with the intent to mount. He will vocalize when play is not reciprocated. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/14/17 During his initial medical exam, Kyle allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Kyle so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Kyle becomes jumpy and mouthy when excited. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Kyle has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Kyle’s teeth make contact with skin).
04/15/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
4/15: When off leash with another dog, Kyle engages in gentle play with the intent to mount. He will vocalize when play is not reciprocated. 4/16: Kyle continues to solicit play. He attempts to mount when no longer being engaged by the other dog. He begins to vocalize when soliciting. 4/22: Kyle greets politely and will engage in gentle play when solicited.
