A volunteer writes: “Blue Eyes”… I believe it was the name of a very praised actor, back in the times…We have our own, here at the Manhattan Care Center, Kushner, a very handsome boy with enthralling aqua marine eyes. Kushner was very scared when he arrived at the care center although never aggressive, only retreating like a Bernard L’Hermite in his additional kennel. He so much wanted to trust, though, coming to his door, accepting treats and caresses. The leash was his nemesis…I tricked him yesterday..I do feel bad…But it got him out of his den and in the street. I wonder if Kushner ever used a leash ? He walked at first slowly, sniffing a lot his surrounding and marking his territory. A little puppy screamed at him and another pooch tried to give him grief. Kushner did not really care. He did show interest, though in two lovely female Pities passing by. I was told that meeting his peers in playgroups was really his cup of tea and that he enjoyed his time there very much… After a while , Kushner improved his performances, leash on and it is now just a matter of time for him to go around the block and even to the park. He knows how to sit and takes treats gently from my hand. Kushner is really a beautiful dog, very attractive, nicely built, friendly and really trying very hard to be a socialite. I believe that efforts should be rewarded mostly when they stem from a good person, child or …a good dog… Will you be there for Kushner? Will you teach him that life as a pet can be a wonderful one…in loving and caring hands. Kushner is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to be your best student and forever best friend.
01/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 1/16/17 Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/22/17 Look: 5. Dog growls. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Kushner growled when his face was touched during look, the rest of the handling portions were omitted. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with a female dogs Kushner is loose and bouncy. He will run alongside the female and is tolerant of her assertive behaviors. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/16/17 During his initial medical exam, Kushner was growling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Kushner has made considerable progress since intake, due in part to attending playgroup. However, he remains uncomfortable with close interaction and we therefore feel that placement with a New Hope partner is in his best interest at this time.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Kushner has been very fearful at the care center. He has begun to slowly warm up to people. It is important to always go slow and give Kushner the option to walk away from any social interaction. Kushner should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Kushner’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Kushner would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.)
