A Little Bit About Me…
A volunteer writes: Although he was named after a Spartan warrior from a video game, this Kratos is a sweet, happy boy who loves some good ear scratches! Young and energetic, Kratos seems to be house trained, and can sit nicely for treats (although whether they’re tasty enough for him or not is another story– when I gave him one today, he took one taste then spit it out!). Come and meet this character at the Brooklyn ACC today!
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Basic Information: Kratos is a male large breed brown brindle dog that is estimated to be 1 Year old. His previous owner got him from as a gift from a friend and kept him until they were moving to an apartment that did not allow animals
Previously lived with: 3 Adults, 1 Child (Age 4), 1 Large Dog
How is this dog around strangers? Kratos is friendly with strangers and will jump around to greet them. He will seek attention from anyone that approaches him.
How is this dog around children? Kratos lived with a child and was very affectionate with her but would be somewhat rough when playing.
How is this dog around other dogs? Kratos lived with another dog and they would get along with each other but would rough when playing.
How is this dog around cats? Kratos was not around cats in his previous home.
Resource guarding: Kratos will growl at people when they go near his food and is not bothered when people approach his toys.
Bite history: Kratos has no history of having bitten another person or animal
Housetrained: Yes
Energy level/descriptors: High Energy, Excitable, Pushy
Other Notes: Kratos tends to rip up pillows at home and get very excited when he hears a loud noise. He enjoys baths and being brushed for long periods of time. He is not bothered by having his nails trimmed but will be very fidgety.
Has this dog ever had any medical issues? No
Medical Notes : Kratos has no known medical concerns.
For a New Family to Know : Kratos is an excitable dog that enjoys following people around the home. He likes to play with bones and balls and will play tug-of-war. He is used to being indoors all day and eats dry food. He is very house trained and rarely had accidents at home. He does tend to pull very hard on the leash when out for a walk.
Behavior Notes: Kratos was very loose bodied and was jumping up to greet me when I approached. He was barking and wagging his tail when I stopped giving him attention. When I had him on leash he started biting at it and would not let go.
Details on my behavior are…
Date of assessment: 26-May-2018
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends (may need coaxing to approach). Dog is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Paw squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure.
Paw squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. Dog does not place his/her body between you and the toy.
Summary: Kratos came into the assessment room with very high activity level. He was social but very hyper active and begin to mouth the leash, he slowly de- escalates. Kratos can be rough with play and doesn’t listen to correction very well.
PLAY GROUP :
According to Kratos’ previous owner, Kratos lived and got along with another dog, but they were rough when playing.
5/25: When off leash at the Care Center, Kratos was sexually motivated and attempts to mount when introduced to a novel female. The session is shortly ended.
Date of intake: 24-May-2018
Summary: Loose and wiggly, allowed all handling.
Date of initial: 24-May-2018
Summary: Playful, unruly allowed handling
ENERGY LEVEL: Kratos displays a very high activity level in the care center.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: ADULT ONLY HOME
Recommendations: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments: No children: Due to the behavior seen in the care center (mouthy, rough with play, exuberant not knowing his own strength) we feel that Kratos may be intimidated for young children. We feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.
Potential challenges: Destructive behavior, Basic manners/poor impulse control, Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition, Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:
Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
Low threshold for arousal: Dog has displayed low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating mouthy the leash, body checking the handler and very exuberant. Consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Kratos to new and unfamiliar situations.
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Kratos has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Kratos’s teeth make contact with skin).
Destructive Behavior: Kratos is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on furniture. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Kratos will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects.
